Virtual Synthesizer (Download)

  • Based on the legendary, monumental synthesizer classics GX-1 as well as CS-80 from the 1970s
  • Combines the extensive possibilities of the GX-1 with all the functions of its successor, the CS-80, to create a great sound synthesis
  • Dual-layer voicing architecture with 16 voices per layer
  • Two different patches with their own controls for layer volume and panning can be played simultaneously in either split or layer mode.
  • All voicing parameters have been recreated, including filtered waveforms at oscillator level, triangle wave with octave shift and inverted filter envelope control
  • Precise replication of the filters of both units
  • Four polyphonic voice groups, each with a voltage-controlled oscillator, resonant high-pass and low-pass filters, noise generator, sine wave, two envelope generators and a velocity-sensitive VCA
  • Sub-oscillator LFO for each group with sine, sawtooth, ramp, square, sample & hold and noise for modulation as well as tempo synchronisation
  • Replica of the CS ring modulator, which modulates the summed output of each group pair with its own independent oscillator
  • Setting of the coarse pitch range for each oscillator in traditional organ foot positions
  • Accurate emulation of specific playing aids such as ribbon controllers etc.
  • Independent panning of the groups and layer stereo effects chain allow for wide-ranging, lively stereo sounds
  • Tone Selector offers all original CS-80 factory presets as well as memory space for custom sounds
  • Panel control for selecting layers, with functions for exchanging settings between groups in a layer, the lower and upper layers or across presets
  • Supports channel pressure and polyphonic aftertouch, as well as a last-note priority mode that simulates the behaviour of polyphonic aftertouch.
  • Full MIDI control and DAW automation
  • Over 1000 presets
  • Scalable user interface with focus zoom-in function as well as standard interface zoom and resize by dragging

Great value for a stellar sounding synth!

So here is the GX-80 by Cherry Audio
A hybrid reincarnation of Yamaha's novel synthesizers. The CS-80 and it's predecessor GX-1.
And if you're not familiar with the legendary CS-80, it is undoubtedly the most expressive analog synthesizer ever made!
It was considered by many the ultimate performance instrument and it found it's way on many influential recordings by renowned electronic music pioneers most notably Vangelis (Blade Runner / Chariots Of Fire) and Jean-Michel Jarre (Oxygen 7-13).
It featured the innovative "polyphonic aftertouch" as it's big brother GX-1 (which means you can modulate the sound of each note according to the pressure you apply on each corresponding key), a feature unprecedented for the time (GX-1 released in 1973 / CS-80 in 1978) while still impressive today!
I am really not familiar with the GX-1. It was a massive synth weighing 1 ton with a price-tag of 50K, made before I was born.
I can only imagine what a beautiful synth it was through this emulation!
So let's get to the point... how does the GX-80 sound?
Incredibly... amazing. I strongly recommend this synth. It just captures every nuance of the velvety pads and string ensembles the CS-80 is known for.
Lush sounds , deep bass, ethery leads, it's all there. And honestly, it's not just the sound with this synth. It's the expression!!!
It's aftertouch implementation is just incredible!
They've modelled it so good. The behavior of sound modulation corresponding so well to every key stroke, it gives a whole new meaning to my keyboard's sensitivity!
Congrats to Mark Barton for his DSP work in this.
The effects of the synth are great sounding and the ribbon pitch controller offers some amazing pitch-bending techniques by "touching" the strip directly (instead of using your keyboard's pitch bend wheel- also available).
Well-designed synth with smart menus, resizable (drag) UI and a lovely focus/zoom feature!
The GX-80 comes with 1060 expertly crafted patches and nearly every parameter of the synth can be automated.
Congrats to Cherry Audio
for a brilliant sounding synth with excellent features!

The best virtual synth and most accurate emulation of the CS-80 period
Best virtual CS80 21.08.2023
My favorite VST synth hands down and it sounds far closer to the real CS80 than the Arturia CS80 emulation while costing half as much. It's power hungry (make sure your laptop is plugged in or at full battery - power throttling at lower battery levels will make this VST start popping and skipping. This is the finest sound virtual synth that I have ever heard.
