Das Fazit der Bewertung kann man gleich zu Beginn setzen: ein rundum gelungenes Instrument.
Wer einen Ukulelenbass sucht, der nicht die selben Charakteristiken hat, wie diejenigen in der gängigeren Ausstattung mit Polyurethansaiten, kommt hier absolut auf seine Kosten. Die Roundwound-Saiten mit Nylonkern bedienen tatsächlich ein deutlich anderes Klangbild, welches sich an dem eines Akustikbasses mit großem Korpus orientiert. Allerdings nur orientiert, denn durch die kurze Mensur und damit verbundenen leicht veränderten Greif-und vor allem Anschlagtechniken klingt der U-Bass dann doch etwas anders und insgesamt ziemlich eigenständig. Sowohl akustisch als auch verstärkt gibt das ein ziemlich brauchbares Bild ab und der übliche Plopp-Klang der PU-Saiten fehlt mir zumindest gar nicht. Ein Ukulelenbass klingt sowieso nicht wie ein großer Kontrabass, aber der oft beschriebene Tiefbasscharakter, den merkt man beim Spiel deutlich, übrigens auch schon ohne Verstärkung - das macht wirklich Laune.
Spieltechnisch hatte ich überhaupt keine Umstellungsprobleme mit der Kurzmensur, was auch daran liegt, dass der Hals wirklich gut berechnete Maße hat, sowohl in der Dicke als auch in der Breite.
Die Exotic Mahogany Version ist auch optisch ein Hingucker. Sowohl Vorder- als auch Rückseite haben ein mehr als ordentliches Bookmatching und die Zargen sind sehr ansehnlich geflammt. Im richtigen Licht wirkt das absolut edel. Auch die Lackierung ist haptisch sehr ansprechend und der Hals greift sich dadurch wie ein alter Bekannter.
Das, was noch aussteht, ist der Test auf der großen Bühne, aber ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass der U-Bass hier durch die Dreibandklangregelung ebenfalls ein gutes Bild abgibt.
