DSP speaker with impressive sound

With the KRK Rokit RP8 G4, recording and mixing fans get the fourth generation of the active two-way monitor speaker, impressing users with its integrated DSP features such as an equaliser, brickwall limiter, and room correction. These are conveniently controllable via a multifunction jog wheel and an illuminated LC display as well as a smartphone app. With its glass-aramid speakers, 8" in size for low frequencies and 1" in size for high frequencies, this speaker has an output of 203W RMS and produces a sound pressure level of up to 111dB SPL. Bass can be reproduced down to 36Hz. The treble spectrum extends up to 40kHz, which makes this a particularly open-sounding monitor.

LCD and brickwall limiter

The KRK Rokit RP8 G4's DSP-controlled equaliser is designed as a graphic EQ and is controlled by 25 different presets. This helps to optimally adapt the sound of the loudspeaker to its acoustic environment, and everything is conveniently displayed via an easy-to-read LC screen located on the back of the speaker. The KRK Audio Tools app offers additional tools for room correction and speaker positioning via iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. A built-in brickwall limiter protects the speaker when it is pushed to its limits and provides a balanced sound. Thanks to the balanced combo socket, the speaker can accommodate both XLR and jack connectors.

Flexibly adjustable entry-level monitor

The active KRK Rokit RP8 G4 is a good budget choice for beginners who want to get to know their monitoring environment with the help of a flexibly adjustable monitor speaker instead of trying out many different models with a fixed sound. It is suitable for studios where monitoring is necessary at powerful, high volumes. If you don't have free space on the meter bridge or on your desk, you should definitely place this monitor, which weighs just over 10kg, on a stable speaker stand. For users of hardware that reacts sensitively to magnetic fields, the speaker's magnetic shielding is another argument in its favour.

About KRK

The KRK Systems brand, today a subsidiary of US guitar manufacturer Gibson, has existed since 1986, and has acquired as many years of experience in the construction and design of studio monitors. Today, KRK's product range has extended to include subwoofers and headphones, in addition to their near- and midfield monitors. KRK adepts include such illustrious names as Mark "Spike" Stent (Ed Sheeran’s sound engineer), Grammy winner Ed Cherney, rock producer Jacquire King, rock and metal producer Ulrich Wild as well as trance DJ Armin van Buuren.

Also available as a bundle

As a nearfield monitor speaker, larger mixing rooms are the natural habitat of the KRK Rokit RP8 G4. Due to the RP8's size, particularly stable monitor stands are recommended. Isolation pads should also be used to decouple the monitor speaker from the floor and thus avoid solid-borne noise and droning. If these speakers are too big for you, or if you can do without their extra power and have a subwoofer for the deepest bass frequencies, you can also take a look at the smaller and more affordable KRK Rokit RP7 G4.

A mixed bag and be careful what you are buying them for.
Annoyed and depressed. 08.01.2022
Firstly despite some of the hate out there these sound good. If you are looking for nice sounding speakers at this price you could do a lot worse.

Though I was shocked to find out excitedly plugging them in that the noise floor on these is shockingly high. What I mean is as soon as plugged them in they started to make a low volume but very audible white noise/hiss. I googled the issue, I looked in the manual, I prayed to my god and adjusted my audio interface and the speakers but even when you set the inbuilt volume control to -40 db at idle they produce a white noise.

Thus making these almost worse than useless for me, as I was looking for a pair of speakers that could sit on my desk about a meter away from my head. Yes I know these speakers would have been a bit big for that application but I wanted larger speakers for a better bass response at low volumes. The hiss is audible till about a 2 meters away.

On a brighter note they do sound great and the hissing is almost not audible when playing any noise trough them. if you wanted a quiet pair of speakers this is not it.

apart from that the screen is almost a complete gimmick, only 6 or so eq presets you can choose not an inbuilt user defineable eq what I thought the Screen might be useful for.

I am returning these because of the high noise. I used to use a pair of bookshelf speakers hooked up to a 1980's hifi amp and the noise was less than this set of monitors.

SO quick and short if you want to put these on your desk and sit closer than 2 meters or spend any amount of time not listening to something on your setup this is not a good set of speakers for that. But for the price you get a lot of sound that's high quality and distortion free. packing materials where excellent, speaker quality overall is excellent as well, was really impressed until I noticed the noise.

Very pleased
KaarelK 05.02.2020
I'm using these speakers in a ~4m x 5m room with somewhat thick stone walls, as speakers for my PC through a FocusRite Solo Gen3, with the speakers being about 2 meters from my sitting location.

Because these are my first good speakers, I cannot compare with similar speakers from other companies. However, the step up from regular random speakers/subwoofer is immense and really worth expense.

While listening to music I can clearly hear things I did not before in my favorite tracks - this is especially noticeable with electronic music. Also the clarity of the sound is really amazing, even at higher volumes. (The speakers easily reach volumes, that would be annoying to neighbors and far too loud for my comfortable listening before they start getting distortion/artifacts).

The only functionally slightly annoying thing with these speakers is the fact that the LCD display used for setting up the speakers is located on the backside, this makes it somewhat difficult to change the setup on the fly. This it is so probably because of aesthetic reasons. Speaking of which - the speakers have a nice clean cut and minimal look, with the logo of KRK being slightly back-lit. This back-light does not become a distraction in a dark room.

In summary, I find these speakers good for immersive gaming, watching movies and of course music sounds amazing. I am really happy with my choice and if you are looking for speakers to fit into a ~20square meter entertaiment room they will serve you really well.

Best regards and happy listening!

The G4 is a blast
Safwat 21.08.2020
Before I buy these beasts, I went through 10’s of you tube videos to know whether they will be a good addition to my studio. I found allot of controversy, but I’ve decided to get them and decide for my self.

Once I started my sound test tracks I was astonished, I almost flipped on my back. I’ve tried them with different genres and the results were surprising, I’ve heard sounds I never knew about, although I had these tracks since a while and I’ve heard them hundreds of times, so my music production now will be more more enjoyable over using my 250 ohms headphones.

They have a built in pads so no need for additional pads, unless you need the pads for elevation or tilting.

The RP8 have a built in equalizer for High and low frequencies add five steps for both which was easy to use and see the most suitable for my room size and listening preferences.

One important issue to mention is that the RP8 is designed for a larger room, or fully isolated, sound proofed area.
They need to be in about 1-1.5 meters (If not more) away from you and separated by the same.

My conclusion: These beasts are definitely a major go.

Why havent you bought them yet? i love them
Anonymous 05.02.2023
Can i say enough how much i love these speakers after owning them for 2 years? probably no.
I use them in 5mx3.5m acoustically treated home studio
Large 8" speaker goes really low and you can not only hear but feel the bass. They do not lose the balance when playing audio loudly, home parties will be taken to next level (joke, but if you wanted to, neighbours will enjoy music as well)
I did take away 1 star for sound, you can decide yourself, and that is something i was surprised at first but got used to very quickly - there is audible white noise when the speakers are powered ON (when speakers are in sleep mode, there is no noise)
I have listened on lowest volume, cant hear the white noise presence then but just so you know, it is there.
But when i reviewed these 2 years ago, i didn't find much comments about white noise.
But yes - quality, sound, balance is superb, and Digital DSP in combination with KRK app, makes it easy to set-up in any room with suggested settings.
Another decider for me was - front port for woofer, i can place it closer to rear wall than most rear ported speakers, meaning i can have these 8" speakers in smaller room and still be able to utilise them properly.

So a summary - if you are in doubt and cant decide to spend extra for 8" instead of 6 or smaller, get 8" - it's all in one package and you will not have an urge to later buy a subwoofer separately.
Another thing i learned from many many reviews prior purchasing these, you will get used to any good studio monitors and will be mixing with confidence.
So join KRK family.
P.S. i use these with Gravity SP 3202 studio monitor holders, amazing combo. Dont buy cheap Millenium ones, I've heard too many bad stories about quality. These KRKs deserve to stand on good stands.
