7. Drum racks

Eventually you reach the point where you are facing a wall of stands in front of your set – and their legs are all in the way. Time for a drum rack – k’nex for drummers.

A drum rack lets you connect toms, cymbals and what else you come up with on a main strut, well the rack. You get straight, angulated and curved setups. Drum rack are a bit like model kits – your imagination is the limit.

Before purchasing a drum rack you should have a concept

• How big will the set eventually be
• How heavy are the instruments that you connect
• How many connection points do I need
• How often will the rack be reassembled and transported

All these thoughts should reflect in your choice. They are all sturdy, but some are easier to assemble – meaning easier to transport. Some manufacturers offer a multitude of accessories and extras – important if you want to expand the rack.

You can close in on the matter with a little drawing. Do a sketch of your set on a piece of paper and check what shape rack suits best. On top of that you can readily see how many connection points you will need altogether.

The big advantage of any rack is its versatility and expandability. Even if something does not work right away – a few more extra components will remedy this just fine.
