MIDI controller and generative sequencer
Arturia's KeyStep 37 mk2 is a compact 37-note controller and polyphonic step sequencer designed for hybrid modular, hardware, and software environments. Building on the format that made the original KeyStep widely adopted, the mk2 generation introduces deeper sequencing tools, an OLED display with encoder-based editing, and expanded connectivity. Its Slimkey keyboard is velocity- and aftertouch-sensitive, while pitch and modulation touch strips provide direct performance control. At its core lies a 64-step polyphonic sequencer capable of storing up to 64 sequences, alongside a versatile arpeggiator with multiple pattern modes and generative behaviour. Rather than functioning purely as a compact MIDI keyboard, KeyStep 37 mk2 operates as a focused sequencing instrument that lets producers sketch ideas, develop them into structured patterns, and deploy them within broader studio or live setups.
Sequencing architecture and generative control
KeyStep 37 mk2 centres on a polyphonic step sequencer capable of recording or programming up to 64 steps with up to eight notes per step. Sequences can be overdubbed, quantised, time-shifted and chained – then stored for later recall in one of the 64 sequence slots. The OLED display and push-encoder allow deeper editing and parameter control without relying on external software. Alongside the sequencer, the arpeggiator offers numerous performance modes ranging from traditional up, down, and random patterns to more structured rhythmic behaviours. The Mutate function introduces controlled variation into sequences, reshaping note patterns, timing, and articulation while preserving their musical character. Additional performance tools such as Gate and Spice strips – together with automation recording of pitch and modulation gestures – allow patterns to evolve dynamically during playback.
Expanded keyboard and performance control
With its extended 37-note Slimkey keyboard, Arturia's KeyStep 37 mk2 offers greater melodic range while retaining the compact footprint of the KeyStep series. Four assignable encoders provide hands-on control over MIDI parameters or external hardware, while chord and scale functions expand harmonic possibilities during composition and performance. These tools allow musicians to generate chords from single notes, to keep their melodic lines within chosen tonal frameworks, and explore harmonic ideas directly from the keyboard. Because sequences can be transposed, reshaped, and extended during playback, the instrument supports a fluid workflow that encourages experimentation without interrupting performance. Within studio environments where ideas are refined and revisited, KeyStep 37 mk2 functions as a compact compositional hub rather than simply a MIDI controller.
About Arturia
Arturia's success story began with software emulations of well-known analogue synthesizers such as the Moog Minimoog, Sequential Prophet-5, and Oberheim SEM. The popular software instruments included in the V Collection are still flagship products of the French developer today. Over time, Arturia has gradually expanded its range and now also offers a host of hardware devices, ranging from synthesizers and keyboard controllers to sequencers. Since then, the former software developer has thus also become a household name in the world of analogue synthesizers and other equipment.
Connectivity and integration
Connectivity remains central to the KeyStep concept. USB-C provides power and MIDI communication with computer-based systems, while full-size MIDI DIN In and Out allow direct connection to external hardware. 3.5mm Sync In/Out maintains stable synchronisation with vintage and modern equipment alike. Four CV outputs – pitch, gate, modulation, plus an additional assignable mod output – enable direct control of modular systems, with MIDI-to-CV conversion allowing external keyboards, sequencers and DAWs to route signals through the KeyStep. The pedal input supports both sustain and expression control, further extending performance possibilities. Whether configured as a master clock, sequencing hub, or MIDI-to-CV interface, KeyStep 37 mk2 bridges analogue and digital workflows within a streamlined and portable unit.
In the spotlight
Arturia's starter software bundle
Arturia's KeyStep mk2 ships with a focused starter software package designed to complement its sequencing capabilities. Analog Lab Intro provides access to 500 curated presets drawn from Arturia's instrument catalogue, covering a wide range of synth, keyboard, and hybrid sounds with streamlined macro controls for quick editing. Ableton Live Lite offers a streamlined production environment for recording, arranging and exporting music within a DAW workflow. Installation, updates and license management are handled through the Arturia Software Center. As bundled software packages may evolve over time, the manufacturer's website should be consulted for the most current details.
