New favourite snare mic
I really like this microphone on snare. The rejection at 180 degrees is the equal of the best cardioid mics I've ever tried so it picks up much less hi hat than most. Which allows your hi hat mic to get a much nicer sound without fighting with bleed from the snare mic. It also means I can position this mic higher under the hi hats and aim it across more of the snare top with little bleed and I really like the tone it gets that way. It's a natural sound and very refreshing after years of miking closer with other types.
Austrian Audio don't publish frequency response but it sounds very neutral to me, which is a relief after so many mics with a large HF boost, I can add my own EQ if I want it. It does not make it sound flat or dull as the detail is excellent for a dynamic, and suits any EQ you wish.
I've tried it on guitar amp and had no problem, being un-hyped it needs a small boost in high mid EQ but I prefer that to a fixed built-in peak. Also works very well on toms but relatively expensive for that role.
The swiveling head is actually quite bulky, even slightly bigger than an ND46, fortunately the design allows flexible positioning. But I keep wishing it could angle just slightly more. It is active dynamic requiring phantom power. This seems to enhance the response, it is almost like a condenser in sound but with a smooth top end, like a 441. The switches are recessed too deep for my taste and the case needn't be that bulky, but everything is high quality.
After using this for a while I'm convinced this is my new number one mic for snare
