Inspired by Kentaro Nakao

Japanese bassist Kentaro Nakao made a name for himself as a key figure in the 1990s Alternative Rock scene, known for the dirty fuzz tone of his distinctive basslines. His unique approach to sound-shaping led to a collaboration with EarthQuaker Devices, resulting in the Scrolls Bass Odyssey – a versatile analogue bass preamp that combines Nakao's distinctive overdriven tones with extensive EQ controls and sophisticated signal routing, giving bassists the freedom to explore an even broader palette of vintage and modern tones. Inspired by Nakao's experience of gigging in hard-to-reach venues, the Scrolls was conceived as the ultimate portable rig, allowing bassists to leave their amplifiers behind without sacrificing control over their sound.

A powerful tone-shaping tool

What sets the EarthQuaker Devices Scrolls Bass Odyssey apart from many other bass preamps is its ability to emulate an exceptionally broad range of bass amplifier sounds, thanks to its extensive tone-shaping architecture. Alongside active Bass, Middle, and Treble controls, Vari-Freq selects frequencies from approximately 20Hz to 10kHz, while Vari determines the amount of boost or cut. Three dedicated switches offer instant tonal adjustments: Deep boosts the lows at 80Hz, Process scoops the low mids for a punchy, modern sound, and Bright adds presence and bite around the 5kHz mark. The independent Drive channel delivers natural, tube-like overdrive, ranging from subtle warmth to full-on fuzz with the gain cranked up. Blend mixes the clean and driven signals, while Bandwidth shifts the clipping emphasis between warm, rounded lows and tight, aggressive highs.

The journey is the destination

The tonal horizons opened up by the EarthQuaker Devices Scrolls Bass Odyssey will leave even the most experienced musicians struggling to decide which direction to explore first, and anyone spending enough time with its controls will discover a whole world of analogue bass sounds. Players familiar with the character of a particular rig can use the sophisticated EQ and Drive sections to recreate its tonal signature, while session musicians and touring bassists will appreciate the freedom to adapt to different styles, venues, and backline setups. With such a broad tonal arsenal at their disposal, even players outside the Alternative Rock genre will find plenty to explore.

About EarthQuaker Devices

EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by the musician Jamie Stillman, who had previously gathered years of experience in the world of music and sounds as the manager of a record label for Metal, Punk, and Shoegaze bands. Today, his innovative pedal designs are among the most in-demand and desirable devices in the boutique segment, attracting interest from a huge community of musicians. Stillman is now in charge of a sizeable team of developers and technicians, who are continuously working from their base in Akron, Ohio to expand their catalogue of hand-made effects pedals. EarthQuaker Devices are used by renowned artists like Paul Simon, Coldplay, Tom Bukovac, Idles, and The Black Keys.

A wealth of routing options

The "portable rig" concept of the EarthQuaker Devices Scrolls Bass Odyssey is also reflected in its connectivity: Alongside a standard 6.35mm output, the balanced XLR output features analogue speaker-cabinet filtering, allowing the pedal to run directly to a mixing desk or recording interface with a more natural, amp-like sound. Meanwhile, the buffered parallel output sends a pristine clean signal to an external destination – particularly useful for recording and re-amping, or for FOH engineers who prefer a clean signal to work with during live gigs. The integrated effects loop sits between the Drive and EQ sections, allowing modulation, time-based effects or additional drive pedals to be inserted after the overdrive while retaining full EQ control over the resulting sound. Together, these routing options allow the Scrolls to function as the command centre of a bassist's pedalboard, providing a solid sonic foundation for players to take their own odyssey wherever they choose.
