5. Wired In-Ear Systems

If, as a musician, you're not exactly a stage jumper (let's face it, drummers don't often leap around the stage), considering a wired solution is a must. Most of these headphone amps are cheaper, less prone to interference, and sound better than comparable wireless systems.

They come in various sizes, some run on batteries or plugs, and they can be mounted on stands, built into racks, or worn on the body. There's a suitable solution for (almost) every scenario.

Instead of mobile headphone amps, you can also use passive volume controllers worn on your body. They make sense when, for instance, a stationary headphone amp is too far away. However, note this: Passive volume controllers don't replace a headphone amp; they complement it. Since passive volume controllers can only decrease the volume, you absolutely need a headphone amp in line. Avoid directly connecting them to the Aux/Monitor output of the mixer. The same goes for earphones/headphones directly plugged into the Aux/Monitor output. It's a no-go due to critically low impedances and often incorrect polarity.

When buying a wired In-Ear system, besides picking the desired design, it's crucial to make sure they come equipped with a limiter. This helps prevent potential hearing damage from volume spikes.

Wired systems are great, especially for drummers, keyboardists, percussionists, and any musicians who don't necessarily need full mobility on stage. Especially if you're on a tight budget, it's smarter to go for a wired option and invest more in a well-sounding, perfectly fitting earpiece.
