AI-assisted guitar amp
With its Reactor 100, Positive Grid has created a fully-fledged guitar combo that is designed significantly more in the vein of conventional stage and studio amps than the company's more practice-oriented Spark amplifiers. The Reactor 100 accordingly features a sturdy wooden cabinet, a specially matched 12" speaker, and a classic-style control layout with gain and volume dials as well as a three-band EQ and an effects section. Beneath this traditional-looking exterior, however, is a cutting-edge modelling amp that employs Positive Grid's new Amp Intelligence technology, allowing users to create dynamic tones via presets or by using text prompts, photo images, or audio clips. Despite its impressive feature set, however, the Positive Grid Reactor 100 still retains a very intuitive operating principle that closely resembles that of a regular guitar amplifier.
Simple controls, not endless menus
Despite having packed the Reactor 100 with the latest modelling technology, Positive Grid has also ensured that it's simple to operate: Instead of a touchscreen and endless menus, the combo has a conventional top panel with all of the familiar controls, including gain, EQ, effects, and volume. The Amp knob on the far left-hand side of the panel allows the user to switch between amp types, with the adjacent Push/Smooth and Heat switches further tweaking the sound. The presets and banks, as well as the built-in tuner, are all accessible via physical controls – equally, all the amp's sounds and signal chains can be edited quickly and easily via the dedicated Reactor app. The connections on the Reactor 100's rear panel are equally practical and include an effects loop and MIDI and USB-C interfaces as well as a power amp input for modellers and multi-effects units, a line output, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Tradition meets high-tech
The Positive Grid Reactor 100 is primarily aimed at guitarists who are looking for a powerful yet versatile amplifier. Its 12" speaker and sturdy wooden cabinet – and the direct, hands-on controls – make for a much more "mature" feel than the company's existing Spark series. Its revolutionary modelling capabilities mean that beginners and advanced players can find their ideal sound in next to no time, although guitarists with a passion for experimentation will find it particularly exciting. This is exactly where Positive Grid's new Amp Intelligence technology comes into its own, allowing players to translate their ideas into specific tones via text, image, or sound clip: This concept that might admittedly be less interesting to purists who want to focus on one specific sound, but those users will surely find the Reactor 100's enormous flexibility and 100W output (which can be reduced to 25W or 1W as desired) attractive all the same.
About Positive Grid
Positive Grid was founded in the Californian city of San Diego in 2013, and from the very beginning the company’s mission statement was to bridge the gap between mobile technologies such as smartphones, as well as the potential offered by the digital world, and the analogue feel of guitar and bass equipment. The company’s pursuit of this goal has produced a range of exciting products, the most significant of which is undoubtedly the award-winning BIAS FX 2 amp and effects modelling software platform. With its "Spark Amp" series, Positive Grid has combined the limitless possibilities that the digital world provides with conventional guitar and bass amplifiers. Positive Grid’s spirit of innovation and the speed with which new developments are produced is a clear indication of what this still relatively young company has in store for the future.
Powered by creativity
The Positive Grid Reactor 100 is most at home wherever guitarists need to switch between completely different sounds, and its switchable output power means that the amp can adapt to everything from low-volume home practice to louder environments like rehearsals and gigs. The USB-C interface lets users record their ideas or play in backing tracks, and as mentioned above, the amp can be completely controlled via the Reactor app. Players who already have an external effects setup or a modelling board also have plenty of creative freedom thanks to the Reactor 100's effects loop and power amp input, in addition to which the MIDI and Bluetooth interfaces and the wireless footswitching system (sold separately) mean that toggling between sounds while playing is a breeze. The Reactor 100 will thus particularly appeal to guitarists who have to accommodate a myriad of different styles, such as those who play in cover/top 40 bands.
In the spotlight
Amp Intelligence
One of the most intriguing aspects of Positive Grid's Reactor amplifiers is the company's new Amp Intelligence technology. Instead of configuring sounds in the conventional way from amplifier types, speaker cabinets, and effects, tonal ideas can simply be described here, with terms like "warm vintage crunch" or "modern British high-gain sound" already sufficient for the system to generate a suitable tone. In addition, the amplifier can even process images or short audio clips as a basis for creating new sounds if desired. The Reactor app also allows users to create and further refine their own virtual amplifier models. Notably, the system even adapts over time to the user's personal tonal preferences and preferred sound characteristics.
