Super versatile and affordable piece of gear
Ivan Szew 11.03.2024
Amazing price-quality relation, lots of synth engines and modulation possibilities, step parameter locking as well. Filters could be a lil better and knobs material too, but for this price range is unbeatable. Also good for live sets, fits in a small bag and you can use it with 4 batteries AAA that would last up to 4 hours. I recommend

Fun, creative, well built… make no mistake - It’s ROLAND
Jon V 25.05.2025
The SH-4d is a little, black beast. Yes, it’s powerful, with 4 parts + drum part, lots of hands on control, even though the lcd screen is small, the variety of knobs and thoughtful interface balance it out. Yes, it’s demands some learning curve but it’s actually easier than you think… take few hours to read the manual and you will be rewarded instantly. As this is written, a new firmware has recently been released, 2.0 (go to Roland website to download, few steps to update). There are lots of new features that many have called out for and I understand Roland listened... After this update, the SH-4d has 13 synth variations, instead of 11. The two new variations are ‘Step’ and ‘Harmony’ that emulates organs, I’m actually impressed! Well done Roland! The retro look is great, looks cool, only thing I could complain about is size of knobs.. bigger would have been better but not at all a problem.
The sound. With built in multi effects and sounds that derive from Roland’s decades of development, like the Zen core engine, you get to the real thing, can be cold, digital and warm analogue as well. Finally, this machine wants your full attention. For me it’s got it!

Great form factor and package, limited sequencer
tksst 18.12.2024
This is a great form factor, built like a tank with lots of tactile interface. From a sound design perspective a bit more shallow than Syntakt e.g. but with much more options. The downside is the limited sequencer /not easy song mode but if you are looking for compact package with Roland's Zen sounds this is superb.

Good range of sounds
Robert7183 20.11.2025
Pretty good selection of presets for the money. Bit limited for both sequencing and sound design. Good for multi timbral use. Lousy digital filter.

This should have been a great comeback for the Roland groove machine…
cvts 13.01.2026
but honestly, the user experience is rough on every level.

It’s absolutely not usable for live performance. Putting record and stop on the same button causes so many problems — it’s just stressful. The sound isn’t great either, and there’s this constant USB high-pitched tinnitus-like noise. No autosave. And manual saving is way too slow for fast, real-world situations. I actually like some of the features, but others feel completely unnecessary — like, who even asked for this?

I bought it as part of the Aira Collection, but yeah… I really don’t like it.
