The Universal Audio Apollo x4 Gen 2 is a versatile desktop audio interface that connects to Mac and PC systems via Thunderbolt 3, combining portability with a comprehensive feature set. Configured as a 12-in/18-out interface with four Unison preamps, it sits between the compact Apollo Twin X and the larger rack-mounted models in the Apollo range. This second-generation version introduces redesigned 24-bit/192 kHz converters alongside a range of new features, including integrated speaker management and optional room correction. With four SHARC DSP processors, the Apollo x4 supports real-time processing using UAD plug-ins, which have become a widely established part of professional recording and mixing workflows. The included Essentials+ plug-in bundle adds more than 20 processing tools, providing a solid foundation for recording, mixing and production.

A second-generation Apollo
With its expanded feature set, the second generation of the Apollo X series extends well beyond the core functions of a conventional audio interface. The UAD Console software also serves as a monitor controller, offering features such as bass management, while the Apollo x4 supports straightforward 2.1 monitoring setups consisting of two speakers and a subwoofer, in contrast to the larger rack-mounted models designed for immersive audio formats. Optional Sonarworks Apollo Monitor Correction, used in combination with a separately available measurement microphone, provides an integrated solution for speaker calibration directly within the UAD Console environment. This level of integration is particularly useful in studios where room acoustics are less than ideal, helping to achieve more consistent monitoring. During recording, features such as mixer scenes and Auto-Gain streamline the workflow and reduce setup time.

Fully equipped mobile studio
The Apollo x4 Gen 2 is a high-quality desktop audio interface that combines four Unison preamps with a flexible feature set suited to musicians, producers and recording engineers. Its integrated monitoring section includes a talkback microphone, monitor switching capabilities and two independently addressable headphone outputs, allowing the unit to function as an audio interface, monitor controller and DSP processing hub in a single compact device. Unison technology closely integrates the preamps with DSP-based plug-ins, enabling convincing emulations of classic analogue hardware while maintaining very low monitoring latency. Beyond recording, UAD plugins can also be used throughout the mixing and mastering process within DAWs such as Cubase, Logic Pro, Ableton Live and Pro Tools. The result is a streamlined workflow that remains consistent from tracking through to the final mix.

About Universal Audio
Few manufacturers can draw upon a wealth of audio engineering experience comparable to that of Universal Audio. The company's founding father Bill Putnam, along with his friend Les Paul, have an admirable reputation as trend-setting music producers and developers of legendary analogue studio technology. Putnam recorded Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Sarah Vaughan, and was Duke Ellington's favourite sound engineer. He developed the famous 1176 Peak Limiter and distributed the Teletronix LA-2A level amplifier. This earned him a posthumous "Technical Grammy Award" in 2000. In 1999, Putnam's sons, Bill Putnam Jr. and James Putnam, re-founded Universal Audio, transferring their father's analogue vision and craftsmanship to the digital music world. Its ability to be cascaded with other Apollo models also makes it an attractive option for producers who require a compact interface on the move while maintaining compatibility with a larger studio system. Up to four Thunderbolt-equipped Apollo interfaces, including a single desktop model such as the Apollo x4, can be combined within the same setup to expand input, output and DSP resources. The system can also be integrated with up to six UAD-2 devices, including UAD-2 Satellite units and PCIe cards, providing additional processing power for larger productions. This scalability allows the Apollo x4 to remain effective as recording requirements evolve, without changing the overall workflow.

UAD Analog Classics
The Universal Audio Apollo x4 Gen 2 is available with either the UAD Analog Classics or UAD Analog Classics Pro plug-in bundle, allowing users to choose the package that best suits their workflow. Even the standard edition includes more than 20 effects, the majority of which run on the interface’s onboard DSP, covering a broad range of recording, mixing and production tasks. The collection features emulations of classic studio hardware, including the UA 610 preamp, Teletronix LA-2A compressors and several versions of the Pultec EQ, alongside more specialised tools such as the Marshall Plexi amplifier simulation, Oxide Tape Recorder and Auto-Tune Realtime Access. It also includes the PolyMAX Synth, adding a software instrument to the package. Taken together, the bundle provides a comprehensive starting point for a wide variety of production scenarios.
