It likes to move
Multicoloured beams of light glide through the room, while strobe effects – created by dedicated LEDs – flash in time with the music. Hard to believe this is all coming from the compact and affordable Varytec LED Derby ST here. The best place for this impressive range of moves is a smaller, darkened venue, where the derby can be mounted or placed almost anywhere thanks to its integrated bracket. Also included as standard is a remote control that makes it easy to trigger light shows at the press of a button, as long as there's a clear line of sight to the fixture. Beyond that, there are other control options available, to really bring the best of the impressive range of effects and the broad spread of the beams.
Complete control
Almost forming a semicircle, with a beam angle of 140°, the varied effects of the Varytec LED Derby ST can really fill a dancefloor: The fixture includes auto programmes for both the four-colour LEDs and the white strobe flashes, along with a sound-to-light mode to get the party started. All this is the work of its four 3W RGBW LEDs and 16 white strobe LEDs at 0.5W each. Overall power consumption for the fixture, which is designed for indoor use in line with IP20, comes in at 28W. To get the effects going, there's the remote control, menu buttons with a display on the housing, and DMX mode. For DMX operation, a controller is required – there are many options sold separately, which all connects via the derby's three-pin input, with an output provided for master–slave setups. The IEC power connections are set up as both input and output as well, to pass power on to another device.
Easy setup and effective variety
For anyone starting out in the world of show lighting, the Varytec LED Derby ST offers two effects in one, both of which are straightforward to use and powerful enough for most smaller venues. Whether it's used for a party at home or installed behind a bar, the derby and its strobe programmes can be launched using the included remote. For mobile DJs looking to fill the dancefloor while they have their hands full with the music, the sound-controlled mode is a good fit. In youth clubs, schools, and similar locations the effect can be easily combined with a DMX controller, using one or four channels, to bring plenty of variety to a range of events. And because it could scarcely be easier to operate, the Varytec LED Derby will also of interest to rental agencies and event managers who provide services for events like weddings.
About Varytec
Over the years, Thomann has greatly enriched its already extensive range of lighting products with its in-house brand Varytec. In addition to LED spotlights, theatre lighting, and moving lights, Varytec offers an arsenal of matching accessories. Tripods, cables, power distributors, and all kinds of other components are, like the lighting solutions themselves, manufactured by well-known names in the field. The firm's direct sales approach, which eliminates intermediate retailers, ensures that all of these products are nevertheless attractively priced. Varytec's range comprises well over 200 items, which will illuminate everything from home-streamer setups to photo studios, theatres, and concert halls.
Anything is possible
Users who combine the Varytec LED Derby ST with a DMX controller, managing it across four channels, will really open up the full range of effects this compact light fitting is capable of. The colours of the beams of light produced by the derby LEDs can shine individually or in combination. There's a dedicated fader for the movement effects, with adjustable speed. In the same way, the 17 different strobe patterns are triggered using their own control. This calls for a DMX controller with four free channels, ideally with a three-pin DMX connection. Compatible hazers or fog machines can also be integrated into the same DMX setup, allowing atmospheric effects to be controlled alongside the lighting, although even a standalone fog machine will nicely enhance the derby's effects. Similarly, additional derby units can run in sync with the first by linking them via DMX cables from the main unit's output. At the same time, the first device can power the others from its power out, so the whole setup can run from a single mains connection.
