Yamaha THR30IIW Black

I have been using a Mulit-FX or a Vox AC15 for a while, but during the summer our practice space closed down, so the band had to practice wherever we could. Because of all this moving I wanted something small, LIGHT and preferably with built-in speakers, since not all the lads have a PA system at home.

When I received it, it was lighter than I thought, smaller than I thought and MUCH LOUDER than I thought. The wireless system functions effortlessly and the sound is pretty good, both from the guitar and the Bluetooth. Keep in mind that this is a fairly cheap and lightweight solution compared to "professional" or more standard amp/speaker equipment.

At the end of the day, I can play over our drummer with a satisfactory tone and portability, so I'm very pleased. The band practice will live on throughout the summer!

I got myself the Yamaha thr30IIw with the line6 relay and my son got a decent student amp, I also got another €150 amp and the Yamaha thr is my favorite. At first I felt a little bad having spent so much on an amp but the sound of the Yamaha is worth it. The sound is deep and full and feel like it should come from something way bigger. Our other amps makes sounds that feels thin and lacking. The amp is sturdy built and all the parts fit like they should, no loose parts or unadjusted parts, it feels more solid than anything I own really. My macbook is loose in comparison. I think it's a bit heavy but i guess it's necessary for the deep fine sound so i guess it's ok. I had no problems either with the relay or a basic cable. Now it's my undisputed favorite, it feels wrong to play my Epiphone Les Paul on a cheaper amp. I was afraid the lights would look silly but to my surprise I honestly really like that light. Im so glad I got this amp

Let me start by saying that this is the first modeling amp that I've heard, which kinda comes close to the tube sound and feel. Kinda. Don't expect something that could fool you for a tube amp in a blind test, but at least Yamaha's Virtual Circuitry Modeling technology is much much better than Boss' Tube Logic for example, which I find terrible.
Pros: It is wireless (we'll come back to that), battery operated, it has a warm clean sound.
Cons: The effects are extremely limited and poor, the app is the worst I've seen ever (feels like it was made in 2010 and never updated since then), and it's EXTREMELY expensive.
The battery lasts around 3 hours. Which I think is pretty much ok.
It is a "coffee table" amp that you can move around the house and get some extra playing time or practice time when you just don't feel like sitting at your desk with your standard amp. Which I think is pretty cool. If having it makes me play 20 minutes more than I would without it, then it's worth having it.
Now let's get back to the wireless part. This is supposed to go hand to hand with Yamaha's YW10T Wireless Transmitter. It is sold separately (which I think is unacceptable when the amp costs 500 euros).
My suggestion is that you should absolutely avoid the YW10T. It is a transmitter that has no compatible receiver to pair it with (or at least Thomann does not sell one), apart from the integrated receiver that is built inside the amp. So if for example you want to place a pedal or a looper or whatever in front of the amp, you forget about going wireless. You have to use a cable to connect your guitar to the pedal, and then you can plug the YW10T in the output of the pedal in order to connect with the amp. Which I think is pointless. Being wireless means not having a cable plugged in your guitar. And you cannot have that luxury with the YW10T unless you connect directly to the amp.
Considering the 120 euros of the YW10T, I suggest you buy another wireless system that has both a transmitter and a receiver (100-175 euros, there are many options) and use that instead.
If we add all these we come close to 650 euros which is around 100 less than a Blues Junior for example. Which I consider to be a really good entry level (or not...) tube amp. Not comparing apples and oranges, just giving an example about the price.
So is the Yamaha THR30IIW worth the 500 plus the 150 for a wireless system?
If you want a true modeling amp, that can work wirelessly, with many effects, with a modern app that gives you a ton of choices etc, absolutely not.
If you want the equivalent of a tube amp and want to use it as your primary amp, absolutely not. Throw a 100 more and buy a tube amp.
If you want the closest thing to a tube sound (though still pretty far), the ability to play wireless and you don't really care about the app and effects, then maybe yes.
I belong in the third category, that's why I am keeping it.
But I would never consider it to be VFM.
