Performance sequencer & controller
Arturia's BeatStep Pro is a performance-oriented step sequencer and MIDI controller designed to serve as the central hub for hybrid hardware, modular, and DAW-based setups. Combining hands-on sequencing with extensive connectivity, the BeatStep Pro can control multiple instruments – modular synths, drum machines, and DAWs – simultaneously from a single interface. Sixteen velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads, touch-sensitive encoders and dedicated transport controls provide top-tier tactile control, while the sequencer architecture enables real-time pattern creation, manipulation, and performance. More than just a controller, BeatStep Pro operates as a compositional and performance tool, capable of driving analogue synthesizers, drum machines, modular systems and software instruments within a unified workflow.
Multi-track sequencing
At the core of BeatStep Pro lie three independent sequencers: two melodic sequencers and a dedicated 16-track drum sequencer. Each melodic track can run 64-step sequences with adjustable pitch, velocity and gate time per note, while the drum sequencer assigns one track per pad for detailed rhythm programming. Sixteen projects are stored internally, each containing multiple sequences and patterns that can be recalled instantly during performance. Sequences can be recorded in real time from the pads or programmed step-by-step using the encoders, allowing melodic lines, bass patterns and drum parts to evolve together organically within the same session.
Extensive connectivity
Connectivity is one of BeatStep Pro's defining strengths. USB provides integration with DAW environments, while MIDI In and Out enable direct control of external hardware. Two sets of CV/Gate outputs allow the melodic sequencers to drive analogue synthesizers using standard 1V/octave pitch control alongside velocity and gate signals. In addition, eight dedicated drum gate outputs can trigger modular percussion voices or analogue drum machines. Clock input and output support multiple synchronisation standards, allowing BeatStep Pro to operate as master or slave within complex hardware systems.
About Arturia
Arturia's success story began with software emulations of well-known analogue synthesizers such as the Moog Minimoog, Sequential Prophet-5, and Oberheim SEM. The popular software instruments included in the V Collection are still flagship products of the French developer today. Over time, Arturia has gradually expanded its range and now also offers a host of hardware devices, ranging from synthesizers and keyboard controllers to sequencers. Since then, the former software developer has thus also become a household name in the world of analogue synthesizers and other equipment.
Performance-oriented control
The Arturia BeatStep Pro specialises in real-time interaction, moving beyond static pattern playback. The swing control introduces groove variations by shifting note timing off the grid, while the randomness function subtly alters note placement, velocity, or gate length – freeing sequences from rigid quantisation while keeping patterns musical and cohesive. The probability feature assigns variable trigger chances to individual steps, introducing controlled unpredictability into patterns. Each sequencer track operates independently, with configurable length, direction and clock division. This allows polyrhythmic layering – such as pairing a 16-step bassline with a 24-step arpeggio – or creating complex rhythmic structures by assigning different clock subdivisions to tracks. The looper/roller strip enables instant, temporary repeats or rhythmic fills, facilitating dynamic transitions during live performance.
In the spotlight
Starter software bundle
BeatStep Pro ships with a focused software package designed to complement its hardware workflow. Analog Lab Intro provides access to a curated selection of Arturia instrument sounds, offering a palette of synth, keyboard and hybrid presets ready for sequencing and performance. Ableton Live Lite supplies a streamlined DAW environment for recording, arranging and developing musical ideas. Configuration, firmware updates and controller assignments are managed through Arturia's MIDI Control Center software, which also allows projects and controller mappings to be edited and archived. As bundled software packages may evolve over time, the manufacturer's website should be consulted for the most current details.
