The future of pitch-shifting

When it comes to compact pitch‑shifters, the Boss XS‑100 Poly Shifter is the deluxe option. It's aimed at guitarists and bassists who want full flexibility in terms of keys, tunings, tones, and timbres – without having to retune or switch instruments. Boss has developed an entirely new polyphonic algorithm that offers extremely fast tracking, making the pedal capable of processing even complex chords and very low notes cleanly, transparently, and without latency. With a total pitch range of eight octaves (four up, four down), the XS-100 covers everything from subtle detuning to full‑on experimental sound design. The built‑in expression pedal, the easy‑to‑read LC screen, and the storable presets combine to make the Boss XS‑100 a professional pitch‑control hub for live use and studio recordings.

Precision, performance, control

Unlike simpler pitch pedals, the Boss XS‑100 gives users full control over all the relevant parameters, although it's still straightforward to operate. The LC screen lets guitarists manage their sounds, with up to 30 presets that they can edit and activate directly. There's also a dual pitch‑shift function, making it possible to run two changes at once, for effects like harmonies or octave doublings. The expression pedal can be configured for anything from subtle pitch sweeps to aggressive whammy‑style effects, with the pedal's curve also adjustable for different responses. Thanks to analogue dry‑through, the original signal remains untouched and latency‑free, and the processed part is blended in digitally. MIDI, USB‑C, and external controller inputs also mean the pedal can be effectively integrated into studio setups or a larger pedalboard, underscoring its professional ambitions.

Creativity across the board

The Boss XS‑100 is the ideal tool for guitarists and bassists who work with alternative tunings and modern playing techniques – but who don't want to constantly retune their instruments. This means the pedal can really play to its strengths on Progressive, Ambient, Metal, or Fusion tracks: It's also great for cover bands whose setlists often include songs in different keys, as well as for experimental musicians engaging in sound design. And because the XS-100 fully supports low end frequencies, it'll work reliably not only with six-string guitars, but also with basses or baritone guitars. Musicians who work with loopers, MIDI setups, or complex effect chains will enjoy the pedal's extensive connectivity and precise preset management. At the same time, the pedal is accessible enough for musicians who appreciate deep editing options but still value simple and intuitive operation.

About Boss

The Boss brand has been an important part of the Japanese Roland Corporation since the mid-1970s and has caused a sensation from its inception, especially with its compact effect pedals but also multi-effect units and other helpful tools for guitarists. The company's single effect pedals in particular are legendary and can be found in almost every guitarist's home. An incredible 15 million have been sold to date. With its Katana series, the manufacturer now also offers excellent amplifiers at a very interesting price point.

Replace the capo – or dive into sound design

In practical terms, the Boss XS‑100 replaces both a capo and indeed a second guitar in many situations: An artist can simply shift a song into another key on the fly, without retuning their guitar, and without any loss of sound quality. Ambient and Post‑Rock guitarists can use the wide‑range shift function to experiment with huge soundscapes and shimmering textures, while Metal and Progressive players can switch between different drop tunings in an instant. The expression pedal is excellent for everything from whammy‑style effects to microtonal sweeps, or modulated pitch moves for creative sound designers. In the studio, too – when layering guitar tracks, for example – the XS‑100 is a powerful tool that lets producers build a song with alternative pitch settings without having to re‑record the performance.

Good pitch sound and programable interface
music4all 06.12.2025
Its the obvious competitor to the Whamy pedals. Through its programable interface it is easier to handle in live situations.

The pitch sound is according to Youtube reviews more detailed.

Après quelques semaines d'utilisation...
Kid001 13.01.2026
