Buyer Beware, Not True Passive Bass Mode
Ismael M 01.04.2022
Do not buy if you want a true active and MORE INPORTANT passive bass for the Cort A4 Plus bass. This bass requires a battery in passive mode for it to work. If the 9 volt battery is removed or dies on you mid performance or mid recording, the bass does not not work at all if you switch the toggle to passive mode. This bass is described on this Thomann site as an active / passive bass and no where does it say, battery required in PASSIVE to function. This is one of the main reasons for purchasing this bass, to have that passive security, back up if you will, in case your battery dies and of course, to give you an added classic tone in passive mode. I found no distinctive sound difference in sound in either mode , so called active/ passive mode. I contacted Thomann through several emails and several phone calls regarding this issue. They said they needed to contact the Cort manufacturer before making any decisions on what steps to take next. And, just like I said, they confirmed a battery is needed to work in either mode, saying the active mode is bypassed in passive mode, but still needs a battery for the bass to function.
In the 18 years of playing basses, active, passive or active/ passive basses, I have never seen or heard of a passive bass that requires a battery to function at all. There are several other negative reviews regarding this passive mode issue for this Cort bass. Now I'm stuck with this bass.

4 star for the bass but 1 star for Thomann service
Moribund 08.03.2026
I bought this bass after returning a faulty Harley Benton bass (active circuit had stopped working).
On unboxing the Cort bass I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The strings were set so low they were lying across the pickups - the bass was unplayable. I understand that guitars are often shipped with too much relief but it seemed in this case that the truss rod was tightened to the full. I contacted Thomann to be told that for certain suppliers they didn’t do an inspection or Quality check - Cort is one of those suppliers. They offered a return.
The other thing I noticed was that the 9 volt battery (for the active circuitry ) was completely flat. Inside the box was a QA inspection sheet - the guitar was 3 years old (by the date of the inspection)
I set the bass up - providing relief on the neck and adjusting string height on the bridge. After some time I replaced tge battery and the bass was playable and sounded great which was a real shame.
My impression of Thomann is that they care very little about their customers. There seemed to be no concern at all that they had sent a guitar out to a customer in this condition. The solution was simple - return the product (despite the fact that I had already returned a bass). My advice is simple - pay a little more and go to your local guitar store where they will do a set up.
