The Genelec 8010 AW is an active two-way studio monitor that delivers the first-class sound of the Finnish manufacturer’s larger speaker models in a space-saving housing. With its signature, stylish housing produced from lightweight die-cast aluminium, this model features two separate amplifiers with a total output of 50W, driving the 3" woofer and 3/4" tweeter to deliver audio with sound pressure levels (SPL) of up to 105dB. In addition to its automatic start function, this speaker also allows the frequency response to be adjusted to the room's acoustic conditions. A balanced XLR input allows signals to be fed in without interference, however, this model does not include magnetic shielding.

Impressive range of features

With a frequency range from 74Hz to 20kHz, the Genelec 8010 AW delivers impressive low-end performance for a compact monitor. To achieve this, the speaker uses bass reflex technology, which maximises low-frequency sound pressure and extends the driver transmission range. For adjustment to room conditions, the bass frequencies can be reduced by either -2dB or -4db with this model. When the monitor is placed on a relatively flat surface such as a desk or metre bridge, activating the Desktop Control function helps prevent reflective frequencies between 160 and 200Hz from becoming overly pronounced. The (deactivatable) automatic start function detects whether a signal is present and automatically switches the amplifier unit on as required. This makes the speaker easy to operate and helps save energy.

For the discerning listener

Anyone looking for a monitor speaker with a flat frequency response and a spacious, three-dimensional sound will not be disappointed with the Genelec 8010 AW. As this device does not include a volume control, it is best suited to studio setups where the listening level is adjusted via an external monitor controller. If playback remains consistently too loud, the speaker's sensitivity can be reduced by 10dB using a slider. The speaker is an excellent choice for recording and mixing professionals who need high-quality sound while working in small spaces. Its housing materials and shape also contribute, minimising resonances and ensuring optimum sound dispersion in multi-speaker setups.

Absolutely perfect clarity and precision. Sonically very pure and clear. For such small speakers they're capable of chucking out a lot of audio, and doing it well. The only downside is that due to the small size, LF suffers - it's not distorted or fluttery, it just isn't there. Best served with the matching 7040 sub.

I'm a pampered audiophile, with the awesome Genelec 8260's as my daily drivers.
I paired the 8010's with a 7040 sub and a M4 and it's crisp, clear and punchy.
Room modes are minimised in SW on the Mac - easy these days in DAW or other.
I'd aim for the Genelec 8010's if you are not ready for at least Genelec 8330 with SAM.
