The smallest of "The Ones"

The Genelec 8331 WH is the smallest model in the "The Ones" series, in which the Finnish manufacturer focuses on active three-way studio monitors with a coaxial design. This construction offers not only extremely precise imaging and a wide sweet spot, but also very compact dimensions. In fact, the 8331 WH is closer in size to a compact two-way system, yet it is packed with advanced digital technology. Whether used in stereo operation or in larger immersive formats, multiple monitors can be networked and controlled via the accompanying GLM software (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager). The separately available GLM set, consisting of a network adapter and a measurement microphone, enables automatic calibration of the speakers using DSP-based SAM technology (Smart Active Monitor).

Intelligent design

The studio monitors in Genelec's "The Ones" series combine a coaxial midrange and tweeter unit with two oval woofers, which are concealed behind the front baffle that incorporates a large waveguide. The two woofers are positioned symmetrically around the coaxial element and behave acoustically like a single large woofer. As the smallest model in the series, the 8331 WH delivers a total output power of 144W, provided by three Class D amplifiers for the bass (72W), midrange (36W), and tweeter (36W). With a maximum output of 104dB SPL and a frequency response of 58Hz to 20kHz (at +/-1.5 dB), the 8331 WH offers impressive performance for such a compact monitor. An adjustable IsoPod for horizontal and vertical placement is included in the delivery. Suitable wall or ceiling mounts and stand adapters are available separately.

Networked monitoring system

The Genelec 8331 WH is an excellent choice for professional users seeking a highly compact, extremely precise three-way nearfield monitor. With its remarkably small dimensions of just 305 × 189 × 212mm, the individually sold 8331 WH is ideal not only for smaller control rooms but also for mobile applications. In theory, up to 80 speakers can be networked using the supplied RJ45 cables. The accompanying GLM software ensures that the entire system is adapted to the acoustics of the respective room (GLM set required), aligning level, frequency response, and time-of-flight differences. Alternatively, a simpler set of sound controls is available at the rear of the device for operation without software or networking.

About Genelec

Genelec was founded in 1976 by Ilpo Martikainen. It grew from a family business into one of the world's leading manufacturers of professional studio and broadcasting loudspeakers. To this day, Genelec's loudspeakers are manufactured exclusively in Finland. Genelec offers performance-oriented, neutral-sounding loudspeakers and subwoofer systems for audio professionals and sound enthusiasts, and a combination of innovative technology and design ensure that the range of products is continuously improving. The company is committed to sustainable development and environmental awareness. In 2018, Genelec was awarded the Pro Sound "Company of the Year" award. Genelec speakers are favourites of such recording industry veterans as Obie O'Brien, Michael Carnes, and David Reitzas, as well as of producers like Hardwell, Keith Ross, and Vini Vici.

Ideal for constructing immersive systems

Genelec's "The Ones" series uses a sophisticated internal DSP system for filters, limiters, and further signal processing. The XLR input of the Genelec 8331 WH can be switched between analogue input and AES/EBU digital input, with the latter supporting resolutions of up to 192kHz. In addition, a purely digital AES/EBU output is provided at the rear of the device to loop the signal to additional speakers. The Genelec 8331 WH pairs perfectly with a digital subwoofer from the 7300 series. For larger immersive monitoring systems, multiple 8331 WH monitors can, for example, be combined with several 8330 two-way monitors used as surround or overhead speakers.

Unbelievable sound, really happy with these monitors
nikreiman 12.09.2023
I upgraded from a set of Genelec 8020c's to these, and the difference is pretty amazing (and I loved the 8020c's, which are pretty respected monitors). The main reason for this upgrade was that the 8020c's really don't reproduce anything below 50Hz, and I found myself having to do most of my mixing in headphones for the bass frequencies. I considered getting a subwoofer for a long time, but it would be hard to position in my studio so instead I opted for new monitors.

As I had hoped, these monitors have really thick and smooth bass. However, the mids and highs are very clear and well-defined. The stereo imaging is also incredible and I could hear new details in beloved old tracks that I hadn't noticed before. And true to the mark of a good monitor, increasing the volume makes the sound feel "richer", not just "louder". According to my measurements in Room EQ Wizard, there is a slight roll-off on the high ends (>10kHz), but in practice the speakers sound extremely crisp on these frequencies.

Build quality is top-notch as you can expect from Genelec. I'm not using any of the built-in room correction stuff since I already have a solution in place for that. I appreciate that the speakers are still configurable even if you don't wire them up with ethernet cabling... there are toggle switches on the back for roll-off, volume, etc. So even though they are "smart" speakers they still behave very well when used in "dumb" mode.

They aren't cheap, but for the money they sound as good as you'd expect for the price.

Suitable for use in small rooms.
yoshitaka 12.03.2021
II mainly compose game music.
My room is small.
It's about 20m3.
I was at a loss with 8331 and 8341. But 8331 was enough for my room.

I was at a loss with other Genelec products. However, 8341 and 8331 are easy to recognize the space. I think this is a big difference.

For now, I don't even need a subwoofer.
Also, you will definitely need the GLM kit. The GLM kit unlocks the potential of this speaker.

By the way, white is recommended.

Tolle Lautsprecher
DanielH82 30.03.2020
