When is a mute not a mute?
Dan1991 02.12.2018
When it's a tourte mute. These are typically used to change the sound characteristics of string instruments. Rather than making them quieter, it seems to take away between 10-20% of their resonance. As a result the instrument sounds darker, and it makes it harder for the produced sound to travel longer distances. This means your neighbours will probably have an easier time, but the people sitting in front of you might not notice a difference.

If you are searching for something to colour your playing, this is it. If you're looking for something to make your instrument substantially quieter, you'd be far better off buying a practice mute instead.

MG
Does what it is supposed to
Marco Gutierrez 23.12.2021
Good for orchestra section playing. But for solo mute passages, a different type, less bulkymute produces better and more pleasant sound.
Note: this is not a practice mute, it is for performance. Is you want your instrument to be quieter for use at home or elsewhere during practice, you need a different type.

Simple and great

Probably one of the best mutes on the market. Perfect for use in orchestra. Only thing I dislike is the fact that the rubber leaves some black marks on the bridge which you might find annoying.

A mute is a mute
Pixolives 26.07.2019
I am an amateur cello player and I use this to play music which requires a mute.

The Tourte Mute does what you should expect from a mute (take away the brightness of your tone and turn it into a more velvety sort of thing). It is unsophisticated and inelegant to the eye and touch. Easy to use and unproblematic. I don't think there is much more to say about it. If you want a piece of jewellery for your cello, this is not it. If you want silent practice, practice with a stick.

Cheap, but not that bad!
S.Ada 07.07.2022
It does what it is supposed to do, but after a while it gets a bit loose on the bridge and slides upwards. It might be possible, that with a thicker bridge it holds much better!
