Graph Tech Ghost Saddles on first generation Variax 500.
These appear to be the only fix for faulty Variax units, but it is hard to find information on how to install them. The installation is a bit tricky, and you need to have the Variax workbench software and interface in order to reduce the string volumes. Ghost saddles appear to have much higher output than the originals, so string volumes need to be reduced by around 60% to avoid an overloaded, distorted sound. After some tweaking, I am now very pleased with my improved sound. Time will tell how they stand up to gigging.

Great, but pricey
I used these saddles, along with the "Acousti-Phonic" kit, to make a Nylon string Stratocaster. Yes, they're a bit pricey but it's definitely high quality saddles that handle the strings very well. And the tone is great.
The wires that lead out from each saddle doesn't look good though. I wish they would have worked on that design in a more elegant way.
