Solid-top parlour with electronics

Harley Benton CLP-12SM BRS Solid Top acoustic guitar

The Harley Benton CLP-12SM BRS Solid Top is a parlour-format electro-acoustic guitar that draws on the compact steel-string designs of the 1930s to 50s. The body pairs an X-braced top made from solid Sitka spruce with mahogany back and sides; the nyatoh neck in turn carries a 19-fret purple heart fingerboard and a 43mm bone nut, and the guitar has a 628mm scale length. Maple and abalone binding runs along the body edges and neck, with an abalone rosette and HB-design abalone fingerboard inlays adding to the vintage-inspired aesthetic. The HB-03 piezo pickup and preamp system with three-band EQ, built-in tuner, and phase switch sit discreetly in the upper bout, making the instrument stage-ready without the need for external microphones.

Small body, big sound

The solid Sitka spruce top on the Harley Benton CLP-12SM BRS Solid Top responds to both light fingerpicking and harder flatpicking with clear articulation, and the X-bracing keeps the response focused rather than diffuse, which suits the parlour format's natural emphasis on upper-mid presence and note separation. The mahogany back and sides simultaneously add warmth without obscuring the top's clarity. The 628mm scale length and 43mm nut width are accessible for players with smaller hands or those transitioning from classical technique, and the C-profile neck remains comfortable during extended sessions. The bone nut and compensated purple heart bridge saddle keep intonation consistent across the 19 frets. The HB-03 preamp sits flush in the upper bout; its three-band EQ allows basic tone shaping, the phase switch counters feedback when performing close to a monitor, and the built-in tuner minimises unwanted delays on stage.

A must for every parlour fan

The parlour format has a long association with Blues and Roots playing – its focused midrange and compact body reward a dynamic, nuanced touch rather than heavy strumming, and the solid spruce top responds readily to that playing style without an extensive breaking-in period. The honest trade-off is volume: A parlour body moves less air than a dreadnought or jumbo, and in an unplugged acoustic session with louder instruments, the CLP-12SM BRS will need the pickup to compete. The HB-03 system handles that transition cleanly, however. For students, the 628mm scale length and comfortable neck profile lower the barrier to entry; for more experienced players, the solid top, compact proportions, and vintage-inspired styling make it a viable second or travel instrument.

About Harley Benton

Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of numerous guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

Sessions, travel, and open mics

The CLP-12SM BRS's compact body makes it manageable in situations where a full-size acoustic is impractical: travelling to rehearsals on public transport, playing a session in a smaller space, or taking it on a tour where luggage has to be kept to a minimum. Plugged into a small acoustic amp or a PA via the HB-03, the piezo system produces a clean, usable signal that handles a live mix without major EQ work. The phase switch is particularly useful in small live venues where monitor placement can increase the risk of feedback. Fitted with Harley Benton HQS .012-.053 coated phosphor bronze strings as standard, the instrument ships ready to tune, and the coating extends string life under regular use. At 98×35×9.5cm it is compact enough for most overhead lockers and guitar bags designed for travel instruments.

I cannot rate this guitar highly enough
Salty Joe 23.01.2025
I bought this as a second guitar for work. I use a Martin Dreadnought and an Ortega Electro Classical guitar, but frenetic playing causes me to bust a string or three on the Martin, generally while playing balls out Irish trad with my mad arsed fiddle playing partner.
Anyway, I needed something to grab when the inevitable ping happens. I wanted something with its own distinct sound and quirky looks.
The HB delivers in spades. Two day after delivery, I played it for the entire three hour gig. It has impeccable tuning stability. I adore the tone, the online samples do it a grave injustice. It's so much better, both acoustically and through a PA, than even Thomann suggests. I can't describe it, but it's a fresh and unapologetic tone, I love it. Action is fine. I had to cut my nails a bit as neck width is a touch narrower than I like, but a week later I'm used to it. Looks wise it is an absolute stunner. The parlour body, slotted headstock and elongated dot markers give it a bit of quirkyness. Build quality is outrageously good for a guitar twice the price. It has become my favourite steel strung guitar overnight. I genuinely can't imagine anyone being disappointed with one of these.

Excellent guitar , beautifully made.
Bob Street 21.10.2022
The only criticism I can say is the the fret ends were VERY slightly rough, easily rectified with a worn paper nail file ! Beautiful sound and playability, what can I say !

What a beautiful little guitar!

So glad I decided to buy this little gem, the materials used are right up there with the more popular badges. My little baby sings and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
