When six strings just aren't enough

Harley Benton R-458FFB LH Roasted MultiScale Progressive Series, left-handed 8-string guitar

Harley Benton instruments have long offered solid quality at very affordable prices, with the range including both entry-level guitars and a few more unusual, extended-range options – including dedicated left-handed models such as this one. One of the most popular designs in this category is the eight-string R‑458FFB Roasted MultiScale from the Progressive Series, here in a left-handed version, which provides an accessible way to step into the world of extended-range guitars – and explore their powerful low-end sound without making a major investment. It all starts with a poplar body, combined with a bolt-on roasted maple neck featuring a slim Speed-D profile: The roasted maple fingerboard, fitted with 24 medium-jumbo frets, offers a smooth, fast playing surface with a clear, articulate response, while also contributing to a stable and consistent feel. Together, this combination produces a sound with plenty of definition and presence, especially in the low end

Fanned frets, extended range

The sound of the Harley Benton R‑458FFB Roasted MultiScale draws much of its strength from its multiscale design, with a scale length ranging from 650 to 692mm (25.59" to 27.24"). This extended range increases tension on the lower strings, keeping them tighter and more controlled even under heavier picking, while the shorter scale on the higher strings keeps bends smooth and comfortable. The electronics are kept simple and effective, with two high-gain humbucking pickups delivering a punchy, assertive tone, controlled via a three-way switch and shaped through volume and tone controls. A DLX bridge with individual saddles, together with a set of solid die-cast machine heads, completes the setup and ensures dependable tuning stability.

A budget-friendly way in

With its very accessible price, the Harley Benton R‑458FFB LH Roasted MultiScale is aimed at both beginners and more experienced players who are new to eight-string guitars and want to explore this extended range without spending a fortune. That being said, the overall value on offer here is undeniable: Few instruments in this price category – and even fewer left-handed multiscale eight-string models – offer such a convincing combination of design, playability, and sound. The proven blend of tonewoods and high-gain pickups delivers a powerful and focused response, particularly suited to low-end riffing, while still remaining versatile enough for a range of playing styles. The flip-flop finish adds a distinctive visual touch, giving the instrument a more modern and dynamic appearance without overshadowing its functionality.

Low-end riffing and beyond

Paired with a suitably powerful amplifier and speaker setup, the Harley Benton R‑458FFB LH Roasted MultiScale is well suited to tight, percussive low-end riffs with plenty of weight behind them. At the same time, the two humbucking pickups can be dialled in for clear clean sounds and dynamic crunch tones, which only adds to this versatile instrument’s appeal. And of course, Heavy Metal and Rock'n'Roll are as much about appearance as they are about sound. With its modern shape and eye-catching high-gloss chameleon blue finish, this left-handed model makes a confident visual statement on stage, shifting subtly with the light and leaving no doubt about its contemporary character.

Unbeatable

This is the second R-458FFB LH I've ordered. The first one came from the B-stock and arrived with an enormous dent in the fretboard, making strings on the 11th fret virtually unplayable. But it's the kind of thing you expect when ordering a cheap guitar from the even cheaper B-stock, so I played the hell out of it for 24 hours, and eventually decided I really liked the model. So I returned it and got one from the main stock.

If you're a broke lefty looking for a budget multiscale extended range, this guitar is a monster. A flawed monster, but a monster nonetheless.

Cons:
— The pickups are, as is to be expected, not great — not awful, but not great. If you have a good EQ pedal you can kind of tweak the signal into sounding acceptable, but an upgrade down the road is virtually unavoidable.
— HB quality control is unpredictable. The fretwork on my first order was (almost) flawless, it's horrendous on the second one. Terrible fret sprout on the upper frets, and bending feels like I'm playing a sandpaper fretboard. It's nothing that a luthier (or an experienced player) can't fix, though. There's probably a nut problem too (which the first guitar didn't have), but again, a basic setup should do the trick.
— Virtually no padding around the guitar when it was delivered (it arrived in perfect condition though).

Pros:
— "Affordable extended range" and "left-handed" are two phrases that don't usually mix.
— The color is gorgeous and the chameleon effect moving from purple to green is magical.
— The roasted maple neck looks very nice too, and plays really well (personal preference; I dislike rounder necks, this one is just the right amount of thin).
— It's overall a very comfortable guitar to play and is surprisingly light.
— I had only ever played one multiscale from a very expensive brand before, and hated it for some reason. Weirdly enough my fingers took to the R-458FFB immediately.

TL;DR: it has its issues, but for the price, it's an amazing axe. Would buy it again. Oh, wait, I actually did.

Really bad problems

1st and 2nd fret on a high e string just don't work, holes below the bridge for strings are also wrongly cut so every time you go to change your strings you have to take off the whole bridge to do that.

Knowing the lack of LH offers in the market, this product is on the sweet spot for adventures into deeper sounds. Best relation between quality/price.

GS
My first extended/multiscale guitar
Gunk Spore 14.11.2025
The beast came all the way from germany to california within 4-5 without a dent or scratch! thing came pretty well set up and was surprisingly comfortable and easy to get used to.
Very comfortable to sit with and lightweight considering the string count, and is also extremely comfortable to play! love how the neck feels.
one thing is im not getting too much definition out of the low 8th string, but i have a feeling thats either due to me not dialing in my tone just right, something to do with string tension. or the pickups maybe needing a little height adjustment. Pickups are also nothing to go crazy over, but definitely get the job done. pretty noiseless, just wish i was getting a bit more definition out of the lowest string. only had the thing for 2 days now, so im sure thats just a matter of time to solving that issue!
overall i am extremely impressed and satisfied with the quality of this instrument, and it has definitely opened up a whole new world to me instrumentally. Thanks HB for making such a solid budget version of this style of instrument, especially a left handed version! cant wait to get another..
