The compact all-in-one solution?
Headrush has long established itself in the world of multi-effects processors, and the Headrush Flex Prime continues to bolster this status with a compact all-in-one solution designed for both guitarists and bassists. With 14 freely assignable DSP blocks and a library of more than 600 amp, cabinet, microphone, and effects emulations, it offers plenty of scope for creating individual signal chains and refining them in detail. A 4" touchscreen makes it easier to navigate the extensive selection and adjust settings directly on the device, while those who prefer computer-based editing can connect the modeller to a Mac or Windows system via WiFi. This provides a straightforward way to shape and organise sounds according to personal preferences without making the overall workflow unnecessarily complicated.
Intuitive operation
Despite its minimalist layout, the Headrush Flex Prime's 4" touchscreen keeps preset editing clear and straightforward, with well-organised icons and names making it easy to find the desired functions without having to work through complicated menus. The interface is complemented by a master volume control and a dedicated dial for quickly navigating the menu and making adjustments in real time. Its compact dimensions also make the Flex Prime a practical addition to a pedalboard, particularly in hybrid setups where external pedals and amplifiers are part of the signal chain. The stereo FX loop provides the necessary flexibility for integrating additional gear, while the four-cable method allows the unit to be connected directly to an amplifier and used effectively in a wider range of configurations.
An absolutely balanced design
The Headrush Flex Prime makes particularly good use of its compact format, with a well-balanced design that leaves surprisingly little out despite its position as the smallest model in the range. Bluetooth audio connectivity makes it easy for players to connect a mobile device and play along with their favourite tracks, while the 3.5mm mini-jack headphone output allows this to be done without the need for external speakers. The built-in USB interface also adds practical versatility, allowing the Flex Prime to serve as an audio interface for both guitar and bass with Windows and Mac systems, while its straightforward operation makes it equally suitable for live use. Alongside the expression pedal, three freely assignable footswitches provide flexible control, and an external MIDI switcher can be added when additional control options are required.
About Headrush
Headrush is part of inMusic Brands and is thus in good company with well-known industry names such as Alesis, Akai, M-Audio, and Numark. Headrush makes products for guitarists, including high-powered active speakers and the innovative "Pedalboard" and "Gigboard" multi-effect boards. The latter were created by the makers of the legendary Avid Eleven rack processor – in other words, by top professionals. Headrush products are also popular with professional guitarists, including Tracii Guns, founding member of L.A. Guns, Robert Guiringer, guitarist for Kendrik Lamar and Eminem.
Workflow, sounds, and versatility
Alongside its extensive feature set, flexible routing options, and large selection of effects, amps, cabinets, and microphones, the Headrush Flex Prime ultimately has to deliver where it matters most: In terms of sound. To achieve this, Headrush has worked with ReValver to provide a range of detailed amplifier simulations, while the factory presets come from ChopTones, a specialist in sound design for modelling software. Those looking for even more options can access a library of more than 4,000 presets through the Headrush community, while external IRs can also be loaded for further flexibility. With the HeadRush ReValver amp-cloning software, users can even create their own amplifier models, resulting in a compact modeller that combines an intuitive workflow with a broad range of sounds and applications and is well suited to everything from everyday setups to demanding professional use.
Tech Update: NAM
Neural Amp Modeler (or "NAM" for short) was conceived as an open-source project by Steve Atkinson in 2019 and, with the help of machine learning, quickly became a leading amp modelling technology. While the initial "Architecture 1" (or A1) version was only usable within a DAW environment, NAM A2 promises compatibility with modellers from the majority of brands in addition to enhanced sound quality. It is important to differentiate here between dedicated NAM players and modellers that use conversion in order for NAM to be used, however: This conversion, the purpose of which is generally to allow NAM’s high CPU/DSP requirements to be reduced for less high-performance hardware, can of course lead to a loss of quality. In response to this problem, alternative versions that require less processing power – "NAM A1 lite" and "NAM A2 lite" – have also been developed, meaning that a suitable format is available for every setup.
