TS808, OD-1, TS-7, TS-9 and others ...

Der Seitzmichel, 17.07.2018
Who needs all Tubescreamer and all associated Mods in a pedal, finds in bonsai what he wants.
Some pedals and mods in here are not so easy to find on the market anymore. Therefore, the Bonsai by JHS offers a great opportunity to get these sounds on board.

Personally, I have not picked up the differences between the different settings. They are very small in some cases. Some adjust the compression, low end and degree of distortion.

I'm more into the "OneTrickPonys" doing ONE THING and doing very well for that. It is relatively unlikely that in a set on stage I will turn a knob in the lower reaches of my pedalboard to get another (relatively similar) sound.

However, if you are looking for sound variations in the studio that have a relatively similar direction (TS), you can take courageous steps here and rely on the well-known JHS quality.

The sound is not as variable as hoped

SidK, 18.07.2018
First of all:
Everything here is purely subjective and my personal experience after three test days on two amps (Fender Bassbreaker 15, Orange Rocker 15, all with Cordial jingle cables) with two guitars (Fender Deluxe Strat SBT and Ibanez Prestige S5570Q-RBB).
Others may consider this different for themselves.

I liked the idea of having a lot of tube-screamer modifications in a pedal so much that I had to try it out.
Unfortunately, the "variations" are so similar that most can only be distinguished in breathy nuances (low, mid and high gain).
Distinct are OD-1, XR, Keelay and the JHS Strong Mod, albeit the latter mainly due to the "boosted" sound.
The rest was in a blind test of me on the pedal I bought barely distinguishable.
You can say goodbye to the fact that you have to be aware that all mods always try to achieve the same in the overdrive area anyway. Only then it makes no sense to install so many mods. I would have preferred it less and better.

Also very problematic is the clear self-noise, which naturally decreases with decreasing gain.
However, I have never used an overdrive pedal ever, which is so much noisy.
This obscures the otherwise really good workmanship accordingly.

The sound of the pedal itself is not bad.
However, you get for 259 EUR quite a lot of pedals, which provide a better sound.

My personal conclusion:
I am still considering if I let the pedal go back.
The sound itself is not bad, but I had hoped for more and was particularly disappointed in the point of diversity.
Therefore, my consideration is strongly in the direction of me prefer to get a pedal with a sound that really convinces me.
At a price of 80 to 120 EUR you could recommend the pedal.
For 259 EUR, I find it very difficult to hold on.
So JHS has not implemented a nice idea in my opinion well enough.
