The Invisible Band

Multitrack backing systems are widely used in live music in all kinds of situations: When solo acts or vocal duos play small stages; when the band has to ditch the drums in a cramped club; or when the venue's backline won't allow for decent miking – that's when dedicated backing systems come into play. They're a practical way to make any gig sound good, whatever the circumstances. With the confidence of their own recordings as a backing band, artists can focus fully on playing their instruments and keeping the crowd entertained. Since CDs and USB sticks with simple instrumental tracks don't really cut it anymore, the M-Live B.Beat 128GB takes the whole concept of playback a step further. It also plays multitrack recordings that can be individually adjusted in the mix on the fly, allows flexible management of setlists and playlists, and can even play videos to be linked to the music.

M-Live B.Beat 128GB Media Player

A very powerful media player

The M-Live B.Beat 128GB plays music files in WAV, MP3, OGG, Multitrack Audio (MTA), and Stem formats, as well as MIDI files, video formats like MP4, MOV, AVI, and photos too. Multitracks with 8 stereo or 16 mono channels can be imported straight from a DAW into the B.Beat and saved there as backing tracks. The B.Beat can also sync the music with videos and images, which can then be sent to a projector or video wall via the device's integrated HDMI port. Two audio inputs allow external sources to be routed through the mix, and up to six individual outputs can connect to a mixer, enabling multitrack signals to be mixed live. The B-Beat can even transmit lyrics and sheet music to a prompter. And when it's time to count in the music, playback can be started directly from the device or via a connected footswitch. Power is supplied via USB-C; and with a suitable power bank, the unit can run for up to six hours off the grid.

No need for a laptop on stage

The features and functionality of the M-Live B.Beat 128GB are designed with real-world professional use in mind. The unit is more compact than a laptop, and more importantly it's designed purely with one reliable function in mind: Anyone who's had bad experiences with computers crashing on stage will appreciate how easy the B.Beat is to handle and how steady it runs. Careful prep of the sets at home means bands can hit the stage with complete confidence. Thanks to M-Live's proprietary MTA format, which splits songs into eight tracks following a standard layout, an entire set can be consistently managed from the mixer, with mutes, EQ, and effects. Being able to add video will take any show up another notch: This raft of functions also makes the B.Beat a great tool for project presentations, art installations, multimedia performances, or even as a karaoke machine.

About M-Live

M-Live is an Italian manufacturer that specialises in playback devices for on-stage applications and backing tracks (which are available via the company’s Song Service online platform). The company has its origins in Midisoft, which was founded in 1987, and has a wealth of experience in its field. One of the flagships of M-Live’s product range is the Merish playback machine, which was originally designed as a MIDI player and has been continuously developed so that it now provides a versatile all-in-one solution for on-stage playback and for karaoke events.

A backing band and VJ in your pocket

Mounted on a bracket, the M-Live B.Beat 128GB can be operated by musicians as they play on stage, or by techs right at the desk. Depending on the scale, complexity, and demands of the show, users can go for stereo recordings or work with MTA files. This also makes it easy for artists to adapt their sets if their bassist doesn't show up or the venue's smaller than they expected. The key functions – like mixing the signal sources and navigating playlists – are so straightforward that the talent can focus entirely on their performances and the crowd. Solo entertainers can load their own backing tracks in MP3 format onto the unit, but M-Live also offers multitracks and karaoke versions with lyrics or videos via its Song Service website.

Love it!
Amy L 05.05.2024
My band recently used the B.Beat for backing tracks, MIDI, and video projection for a show, and it worked well! Figured I'd share my experience with it. When I first got it, uploading the files to the B.Beat was very slow until I updated the firmware. Afterward, everything went smoothly and quickly. I found the app well designed, and I loved being able to easily select outputs, rearrange songs, and keep everything organized. I also appreciate being able to run a second one as a spare on stage. I did run into a problem with MIDI for lighting, so I reached out to the company for support. My show was in 2 days after I contacted them, and they solved the issue quickly. Stefano was incredibly helpful and kept me updated during the entire process. It was the best experience with technical support staff that I had ever experienced. I feel confident that if I ever run into an issue again, they will take care of it. They're proactive with improvements and new features, which is an added bonus. Overall, I like the B.Beat a lot for its capabilities and design. I don't know of any other company that's currently doing what M-Live is doing.

Transformative for live sound syncing
Effbee 23.03.2026
I bought this to reinforce live sound by allowing a full band to play modularly with a backing track should certain members not be free for a show, while also allowing the band to sync their midi devices.

The sound quality is about what you put in to it. If you want to have the best quality, mastered and EQ treated mono WAV files is absolutely the way to go. It will play the sound from the channel you assign it to exactly as you dropped it in. I haven't noticed any additional saturation, EQ anomalies, or compression. It plays the files perfectly.

The included app is very intuitive and it's very simple to get what you want out of it in terms of dropping WAVs in. I found the midi implementation to be a small headache as I can't get certain PCs (Program Changes) to always trigger correctly, and even troubleshooting using a midi device in between the instruments and the B Beat seems to confirm that it occasionally just doesn't send the messages. Not sure what to make of that but maybe a firmware patch will resolve it. In terms of syncing to tempo and start/stop on loopers, I haven't noticed any problems at all. The problem seems tied to the sending of PCs from from what I can tell.

The amount of memory on it is insane for the price. We haven't begun to experiment with video files yet but at present I've got 25 songs on it with several backup routing available (such as bass, drums, guitars, percussion, as required for each show) as well as Midi data, and I've barely made a dent in the memory. Maybe this will change a little in the future when video files are dropped in, but it also allows for looping of video clips and arranging on the app, so don't anticipate it getting too full.

I was a little surprised at the build quality. It feels robust in some ways but fragile in others. I find myself being really careful around it as it's hard plastic and feel that a bad knock to the ground could do some serious damage to it. Guess I'll just be extra careful!

Overall this bit of kit fills a niche that previously involved midi slave devices and looper pedals doing things they weren't designed for - if you have a need to have backing tracks for your show and don't want to go the laptop route, this is an absolute no brainer solution to that problem.

B.Beat 128GB
JUSTICE 3 14.11.2023
Great unit to replace the Cymatic LP16. Love the addition of video, which has allowed us to boost the vision of our shows. The manager could be a bit more stream lined to allow for the option to save after viewing a song, rather than a default save. Would be nice to have the option to back-up single songs or videos and not have to do all at once. Great unit, great price and great operation so far.

New product
GasBand 12.01.2023
Used before Merish products, this one is amazing for the purpose it was built for! Quality is excellent, intuitive interface and so helpful for solo, duo or full band use. Lot of versatility in such a small and light unit! Glad I purchased it. I might have one more, as me and my wife are both singers and sometimes we perhaps solo with backing tracks.
