So loud, so low, so clear

The Mackie Thump 15v4 makes a really solid impression in the low end, but its main strengths lie in delivering high sound pressure levels and clear audio reproduction in a variety of live settings. Behind the built‑in 1400W Class D amplifier, a 15" woofer and a 1" compression driver turn the signal into sound – but not before it's been shaped by Mackie's SoundCheck DSP, which offers a range of practical features. Compared to previous Thump models, the v4 generation offers improved low‑end performance, new voicing presets, and additional features such as Bluetooth streaming and app control. The speaker is also available in a version with a 12" woofer: Both models share a robust enclosure with metal handles, while the composite construction keeps the weight – 14.8kg – manageable.

At the touch of a button

The Mackie Thump 15v4 reproduces audio from a low of 34Hz, reaching a maximum sound pressure level of 130dB. On the rear of the speaker is a connection panel with two XLR/jack combo inputs – one for mic or line level, the other for line signals – along with a mono XLR output. Above that sits a compact mixer section. Users can set input levels with the rotary controls, while accessing DSP features and Bluetooth at the touch of a button. Mackie's built‑in voicing modes adapt the sound to typical applications such as live music, DJ sets, or monitor use, making setup straightforward without much adjustment. Additional features include a feedback eliminator, music ducking and an effective outdoor mode. Music can be streamed directly via Bluetooth, and two v4 speakers can also be linked wirelessly.

A real power player

The Mackie Thump 15v4 is aimed at users looking for straightforward sound reinforcement with added low‑end and greater headroom. Musicians benefit from punchy bass and clear vocals, while solo performers and duos can connect a microphone and an instrument directly to the speaker, so there's no need for an external mixer. In each case, there's a voicing mode that can be used to very good effect: In Live mode, the midrange is emphasised to improve speech intelligibility, while DJ mode boosts the low frequencies. The Bluetooth connectivity is particularly useful for DJs, with both physical inputs remaining fully available at the same time. For presentations or spoken content, the feedback eliminator reduces unwanted feedback, and the built‑in ducking function automatically lowers music levels when a microphone signal is present.

About Mackie

In 1988 Greg Mackie, already a successful co-founder of a pro audio company, founded Mackie Designs Inc. with the goal of producing affordable, high-quality mixers. The company's first official product, the LM-1602 line mixer, was initially produced within the four walls of his home. As sales figures were encouraging, its successor model CR-1604 soon followed - and in 1991 the company finally moved into its first proper production facility. The combination of reliable quality and low prices quickly brought the company enormous success, so that by 1995 Mackie had already sold 100,000 products. In 2003, the company was renamed LOUD Audio, LLC so that there is no longer any confusion between the Mackie brand and its former parent company of the same name.

Built to handle it all

In day‑to‑day live use, the real strength of the Mackie Thump 15v4 is its combination of power and flexibility. The multifunctional design and simple operation will also make it appealing to rental providers, for instance, as almost anyone will be able to put it to immediate use as a PA speaker or stage monitor with minimal explanation. The angled enclosure and dedicated monitor mode monitoring in particular, allow the 15v4 to work equally well as a front‑of‑house speaker or on stage. For more discreet setups, such as galas or galleries, the front LEDs can be switched off. At the same time, the rugged enclosure is designed for transport and can be flown via its mounting points or placed on a stand or subwoofer. For extended low‑end performance, the Thump 15v4 pairs perfectly with the subs from the Thump v4 series: The matched crossover points make integration straightforward, be it in simple plug‑and‑play setups or for more carefully aligned PA systems.
