Back to back backing!
Johnguitars 10.04.2026
The BK-3 from Roland has been around for a few years now so does it still rate? Last year I gave my old BK-3 to one of my grandsons but it was not long before I began to miss my old friend. So when I came into a little money I surfed the net and, 'Lo and behold,' Thomman had the cheapest in town, or at least Europe.
The BK-3 sports the best choir in the business with its, 'Female Choir,' voice. Inspiring for hymn writing which is my particular passion. A good soft pipe organ can be achieved by using the DUAL button with Pipe Organ 3 and one of the ethnic flute sounds. If the automatic backings are not to your liking there is a cancel button on the front panel which leaves you with just pad, bass and drums.
Now the negatives, well there had to be some! The MIDI set up is a bit strange with the main panel voices being on CH4 and CH1 simply being a GM voice bank although again a cracking good choir sound. I find the key touch a bit on the heavy side which takes more effort than a Yam or Korg. This will not trouble you youngsters but when you are in your 70's and every part of your body hurts!!!
Oddly the pianos sound better when triggered from a master keyboard rather than the BK itself. There is a lot of scrolling through menus to change fairly normal parameters.
In conclusion, while I might turn to other keyboards for inspiration, it is to the BK-3 that I go for the final product. e.g. of my hymns sung by Totally Tuneful Praise.
