It's been more than a year since I bought it, now I can write this review. I don't understand the bad rates... it's a great multi-purpose keyboard for the price. I'm not a piano pro, but I have (or had) a piano, several keyboards, hard & soft synths, etc. The keys are very good: slightly softer than my piano, but not too soft. I find the action is very nice for practicing in the evenings when I'm tired. The piano sound is not as good as a top model, but I find it good enough. I bought an expansion with nice pianos, but I wouldn't say they are better than the built-in ones, just different. Now let's compare it with a synth. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't like to be distracted with knobs and sliders when I want to practice chord progressions or improvise. Arpeggiators in synths are great, but I tend to lose the playing inspiration the moment I start tweaking them. That's why I wanted a simple interface and rhythms and this keyboard ticks all the boxes very well for the price. The rhythms that come with the FP-e50 are not good for electronic music, but you can download some nice ones for free from the Roland cloud. About the sounds: the factory sounds are nice and there is a bit of everything. Paying some money you can get interesting sounds with special effects, fixed arpeggiations and some filters controllable from the mod wheel. It doesn't turn the e50 into a synth but it's cool. I like some of them, they make this instrument more interesting. The user interface is not perfect, I understand the designers had to prioritize simplicity, but it's good that you can save your scenes, making it easier to access the sounds and rhythms. If you like sound editing, this is not your synth at all... but I find the FP-e50 to be a very good compromise. The speakers have good volume but not very good quality in sound detail. First thing I did was to connect good external speakers. I have thought many times if I should have bought something else and I don't think so. Well done Roland, I think you offer something with interesting sounds and expansion capabilities and a design that is encouraging for playing!
