Timeless elegance in every form
The grandson of Andrea Amati – the founder of the Cremonese School and widely held to be the progenitor of the modern violin – Nicolò Amati did not just carry on the family's traditions, but ultimately transformed Cremona into the centre of European luthiery. Some of the most famous violin makers of all time apprenticed in his workshop, including Andrea Guarneri and likely Antonio Stradivari, too. The Scala Vilagio F.H. Nicolo Amati 1635 is based on a specific Amati model from 1635, and as such is representative of a creative period at which his style had fully matured. Amati's later instruments are a unification of flawless technique and extraordinary elegance, making them the model for generations of luthiers. One of their most typical characteristics is their harmonious – almost delicate – proportions, which is reflected beautifully in this replica; it's a contemporary homage to the grand history of Cremona, handmade as a one-off with the greatest attention to detail by a European master luthier.
Ancient and modern
Before he even begins to make a violin like the Scala Vilagio F.H. Nicolo Amati 1635, the master luthier Florian Hertzsch – which is what F.H. in the instrument's name stands for – examines its historical forebears in minute detail. This approach combines a deep knowledge of the craft and modern analytical techniques, with particular attention paid to the surface and finish of the violin: As with the renowned original, the top here is made of well-seasoned Alpine spruce. The beautifully reproduced aging and relics of years of use are a painstaking imitation of these centuries-old Italian masterpieces, giving this replica the unique aura of a lovingly played companion from the very first moment. The ebony fittings, and even the amber resin lacquer – also made by Hertzsch himself – give the instrument genuine historical authenticity, without sacrificing modern standards of playability or durability.
Balanced and bright
Despite its relatively short back length, this model still adheres to the proportions typical for the violin: It was this balance and harmony that made Nicolò Amati's instruments so famous, even in his lifetime. The flowing curves and uniform arching are a clear reflection of the Cremonese ideal that Guarneri and Stradivari would take even further. In contrast to the Brescian approach, which generally looked to emphasise a dark, deep tone with the greatest possible projection, it is consistency above all that defines an Amati: an immediate response, clarity of tone, effortless musicality in every position and register. The rounded, delicately finished F holes and the remarkable symmetry of the upper and lower bouts also contribute to that tonal cohesiveness. All this makes the Scala Vilagio F.H. Nicolo Amati 1635 a violin that will play just as beautifully in the hands of a soloist as it will as part of an ensemble.
About Scala Vilagio
Scala Vilagio is a Thomann-exclusive brand that offers high-quality bowed string instruments, as well as professional accessories. The products are made exclusively from sustainably grown European woods that have been naturally dried over a long period of time. The instruments are precisely built by master violin makers according to the same traditional methods as their most legendary forebears: Besides Stradivarius and Guarneri del Gesù, the range also includes instruments by other grandmasters such as Nicolò Amati and Giovanni Paolo Maggini. Each one has a unique tonal palette, giving modern players a chance to own a piece of musical history. Scala Vilagio's extensive range originates with numerous expert craftspeople, based in Franconia, the Carpathians, and Czechia (among other places), and who build each instrument by hand in the tradition of the old masters.
Hands-on history
This violin has been created to make the timeless elegance of the Cremonese School of luthiery accessible to modern musicians – it is absolutely not an exhibit for a museum. Quite the opposite: In his Bavarian workshop, Florian Hertzsch makes musical instruments for musicmaking, combining painstaking craftsmanship with hi-tech acoustic analysis. This approach is further reflected in the accessories that come with the Scala Vilagio F.H. Nicolo Amati 1635, from the Pirastro strings – the company, now family-owned in the sixth generation, continues to make its strings in Germany – to the robust, lightweight, and stylish Roth & Junius Serenata case. An experienced musician looking to treat themselves to an instrument like this will usually own a number of bows already, but of course Scala Vilagio also offers a range of suitable bows with a variety of fittings and finishes.
