Easy to grasp, room to grow
The Selmer Prologue II 18/6 B-flat clarinet comes in a modern guise, designed to get both young players and the young at heart excited about playing the clarinet. The focus is on features that make learning and progressing easier. To that end, the Prologue II has been made lighter, and it has an innovative thumb rest that can be adjusted both vertically and horizontally, providing reliable stability along with the comfort players want. A comfortable left-hand position is supported by an ergonomically optimised register key, while a removable insert that reduces the size of the D/G tone hole makes playing comfortable even for small hands. Besides these technical improvements, this version can be told apart from its predecessor by the Delta symbol engraved on the upper joint.
Fluency and simplicity
At its heart, the Selmer Prologue II 18/6 is a Boehm-system clarinet with 18 keys and 6 rings, including an additional E-flat/A-flat lever. This makes chromatic passages and tricky fingering combinations easier, and helps with smoother runs in fast passages and scales. Thanks to its clever configuration of ring keys, the mechanism is simple and therefore less prone to problems. The keywork and rings are silver-plated, and the body is made of grenadilla wood with a polycylindrical bore. This student-friendly instrument is fitted with hard-wearing, moisture-resistant Valentino synthetic pads, an adjustable four-way thumb rest, and an ergonomic register key. The barrel has an overall length of 64.5mm, and a Selmer Focus mouthpiece is included.
Specifically for beginners
The whole concept of the Selmer Prologue II 18/6 is designed to make it the ideal clarinet for beginners, both the young and not so young. Thanks to its combination of a comprehensive feature set and a comparatively affordable price, it makes a reliable companion at music school, in clarinet choirs, and in other ensembles – wherever it's played, the Prologue II will help ambitious young players progress from the basics through to more demanding repertoire. The D/G tone-hole insert, which can be fitted or removed as needed, also makes this Boehm-system B-flat clarinet a sensible choice for adults with smaller fingers. Players who choose this instrument will also enjoy this playful visual touch: Six coloured bell rings are included, so the instrument can be personalised.
About Selmer
Henri Selmer Paris, founded in 1885 by Henri Selmer – a clarinettist and graduate of the Paris Conservatoire – is a legendary French manufacturer of wind instruments. Initially producing clarinet mouthpieces, the company soon expanded to full clarinets and gained global recognition for its craftsmanship and quality. Selmer became particularly renowned for its saxophones, which have been favoured by countless jazz musicians since the 1920s. Beyond saxophones and clarinets, Selmer also crafts trumpets, trombones, and horns, continually refining its instruments through collaborations with leading musicians and the use of premium materials.
Polycylindrical bore
The Selmer Prologue II 18/6 B-flat clarinet has what's known as a polycylindrical bore. Unlike the strictly cylindrical design that used to be standard, the bore doesn't keep the same diameter all the way through; instead, it's made up of several cylindrical sections with slightly different diameters. There's a reason for this: With a purely cylindrical bore, the upper notes played with the register key never quite match the lower ones in tuning. The finely graduated diameters compensate for this, so the notes of the upper register line up more cleanly with the lower register and respond more readily. This is a great boon for beginners especially: Players who haven’t yet developed a settled embouchure will find they need to correct less with their lips, and crossing the break, which many beginners find tricky at first, becomes smoother. No clarinet can make that transition disappear entirely, but the polycylindrical bore keeps the sound even across the entire range.
