Selmer's crowning achievement
The Selmer Supreme alto saxophone is the result of an exceptionally high bar the company set for itself. The aim was to develop nothing less than the best saxophone ever built, one that would not only rise above every genre, but adapt to any kind of music, playing style, and indeed sound. What emerged is an instrument which is so easy to play that the connection between the musician and the sound feels uniquely immediate and natural. Along the way, the Supreme range took on all the qualities of its predecessors, which is how it's able to fulfil so many different players' wishes: the beauty and care of the Balanced Action, the legendary suppleness of the Mark VI, the ease of the Super Action 80 Series II, the precision of the Series III, and the power and roundness of the Reference models. The Supreme alto saxophone brings the strengths of these legends together in a single instrument.
The best qualities, working in perfect harmony
To achieve all this, the Selmer Supreme alto sax has been reworked from the ground up. It's been given a new bell and neck bore, a redesigned tone-hole layout and fully optimised ergonomics. On top of that, the key heights have been redefined. Selmer has also fitted a correction mechanism for better intonation on middle and high C-sharp, and the concentric three-point neck receiver can be adjusted to suit individual preferences. Ergonomics are improved further by the smaller diameter of the B-flat and B bell keys, along with the direct linkage for the right-hand F-sharp/F. Not to be forgotten is the special mechanism for the little finger and left hand, with its refined articulated lever. This version comes in an elegant dark gold lacquer finish with the Supreme engraving.
For sax connoisseurs
The Selmer Supreme alto saxophone is aimed at established musicians who expect the very best from their instrument. The sheer volume of its tone and its ability to project make it an instrument that will more than prove its worth in both traditional and modern settings. Players from advanced amateur saxophonists through to working professionals stand to benefit from its unparalleled flexibility, combined with genuine ease of playing. It really looks and sounds the part, too. With its slender lines and softened angles, it is an aesthetic joy, and the dark gold lacquer is a nod to the lacquer finishes used as far back as the 1940s. Even every detail of the Supreme engraving has its own meaning.
About Selmer
Henri Selmer Paris, founded in 1885 by Henri Selmer – a clarinettist and graduate of the Paris Conservatoire – is a legendary French manufacturer of wind instruments. Initially producing clarinet mouthpieces, the company soon expanded to full clarinets and gained global recognition for its craftsmanship and quality. Selmer became particularly renowned for its saxophones, which have been favoured by countless jazz musicians since the 1920s. Beyond saxophones and clarinets, Selmer also crafts trumpets, trombones, and horns, continually refining its instruments through collaborations with leading musicians and the use of premium materials.
The Supreme philosophy behind the engraving
The engraving on the Selmer Supreme alto saxophone is far more than just a trademark. In a sense, it puts the origin of sound itself centre stage, seen through the lens of the brand's philosophy. It starts with the floral design, which Selmer says stands for the house's long tradition. The cubes, meanwhile, illustrate the crystalline structure of the metal that plays such a decisive part in the instrument's sound. The cloud-like composition as a whole brings these two aspects together, and the fragments bursting out from it stand for the elements of air, movement, speed, and life. Finally, the disc in the background is meant to be read as a planet, reflecting the idea of infinite space. Who'd have thought a design philosophy could be visualised so effectively, and in such a small space?
