Shure SH55 Series II

Dynamic Vocal Microphone "Elvis Mic"

The 55SH Series II sports the distinctive UNIDYNE® II design, which has been for more than 60 years a symbol of the stage and show business. The microphone combines the nostalgia of the 50s and 60s with modern transducer technology and Shure's typical presence boost, making it an excellent choice for vocals. Via the cardioid polar pattern, it isolates the sound source very effectively against incoming sound from the rear of the microphone, so that there is little risk of feedback from nearby speakers. The 55SH Series II can also be used under adverse acoustic conditions where omnidirectional microphones can not be used.

The low-impedance, balanced output of the 55SH Series II is suitable for connection to microphone inputs from 75 to 300 ohms. The microphone is equipped with a shock mount against impact sound, an on/off switch, and a threaded and adjustable swivel adapter. The 55SH Series II is ideal for use in PA or theatre sound reinforcement, and also for broadcasting- and television productions, studio recording, and other audio applications where a microphone is desired in a classic style.

The quintessential mic – a true classic

The Shure 55SH Series II instantly brings to mind the legendary Elvis Presley, the King of Rock & Roll. The microphone seamlessly blends a classic aesthetic with a timeless, characterful sound, enhanced by modern components. The 55SH-II features a dynamic transducer with an output of 1.3mV/Pa and a frequency range of 50Hz – 15kHz. The cardioid polar pattern mitigates sound pickup from the rear of the microphone, which allows the 55SH-II to be used in close proximity to speakers without creating feedback problems. To minimise handling noise and other low-frequency interferences, the capsule is mounted on a vibration damper. Additionally, the microphone is equipped with a self-tensioning stand mount, which offers tilt adjustments of up to 45 degrees forward and 80 degrees backward for enhanced positioning flexibility. This bundle also includes all the necessary accessories: a cable, a stylish microphone stand, and a thread adapter for mounting.

Optimised for vocals and speech

The Shure 55SH Series II's frequency response is intentionally non-linear to enhance vocal reproduction. To mitigate the proximity effect, the bass frequencies are slightly reduced, ensuring that vocals maintain a balanced sound even when singers are performing close to the microphone. While there is a noticeable dip between 0.3 and 1kHz, the presence range is greatly emphasised, with a prominent peak between 6 and 7kHz, resulting in greater clarity and presence. Additionally, the treble range is affected by diffraction effects in the microphone's housing, causing level and phase shifts that contribute to its unique sound signature.

After that vintage look and sound?

The Shure 55SH-II is a dynamic vocal microphone that offers a clear sound with great presence, making vocals stand out effectively. While some may find the sound to be slightly tinny and "phasey", these characteristics contribute to its signature, vintage tone. This makes the 55SH-II a great choice for those who appreciate its distinctive sound and classic aesthetic. The microphone's housing is an exact replica of the original 1950s design, staying true to its retro roots. Moreover, the 55SH-II is attractively priced, providing excellent value.

About Shure

The American company Shure began developing microphones during the early 1930s and is one of the pioneers of the audio engineering sector. Models such as the 55 Unidyne – known to many as the "Elvis microphone" – and the SM57 and SM58 which appeared in the mid-1960s are still ubiquitous in live sound production today. They enjoy cult status among musicians and technicians alike. In the 1990s, Shure introduced the first wireless microphones and in-ear monitoring systems and became a market leader in this field. In addition to microphones, Shure offers a wide range of earphones and headphones for studio and live use, as well as various accessories.

At home on a live stage

The Shure 55SH-II is tailor-made to capture speech and vocals, making it an ideal choice for stage use. A perfect tribute to the Unidyne 55, its durable build guarantees reliable performance in any live setting. Whether miking a vocalist during a live performance or a presenter on a show stage, the 55SH-II delivers the vintage sound expected from such a classic microphone. Its timeless design takes audiences back to the 1950s. This microphone is also well-suited for use in radio and recording studios when that distinctive sound is desired. This bundle is ideal for the stage, featuring a high-quality König & Meyer microphone stand that, in combination with the microphone, evokes the iconic look of the King himself.

the backbeavers 21.10.2009

Vielen Dank & Keep on rocking

DAS Classic MIC für gehobene Ansprüche!
Bash W.Dee 03.12.2009
