Built for the burn

The Shure SM31FH is a cardioid condenser headset microphone built for fitness instructors, group trainers, and presenters who work in high‑moisture environments. Like the rest of Shure's headset line‑up, it prioritises secure fit and vocal clarity over studio precision – a tool for communication, not critical capture. The wireframe headband is adjustable and light at 60g, while the flexible gooseneck positions the capsule at the corner of the mouth for consistent pickup and effective plosive control. A hydrophobic fabric layer protects the cartridge from sweat and humidity, addressing the corrosion damage that shortens the life of lesser fitness headsets. The TA4F (TQG) connector connects directly to compatible Shure wireless bodypack transmitters (available separately), with operating power supplied by the transmitter itself – no phantom power or inline preamplifier is required. The SM31FH is also available bundled with BLX and GLX‑D systems.

Coming through clearly

The electret condenser capsule on the Shure SM31FH covers 45Hz–20kHz with a response shaped for speech intelligibility rather than musical accuracy. The cardioid pattern reduces background noise – gym chatter, music spill, air conditioning – without requiring the wearer to speak directly into a fixed position. The hydrophobic fabric is the defining feature: It repels moisture while remaining acoustically transparent, protecting the capsule from the gradual degradation that commonly affects fitness headsets. Sensitivity is rated at -50.0dBV/Pa, with a maximum SPL of 145dB – sufficient for even the loudest instructors. The 600 ohm output impedance is compatible with Shure bodypacks, and the 1.1m cable terminates in a TA4F connector.

Voice and vapour

The Shure SM31FH is aimed at fitness instructors who teach one or two classes per day and need a headset that survives repeated exposure to sweat and humidity. The trade‑off is clear: its vocal‑shaped response and moisture‑proofing come at the expense of the neutral, full‑range reproduction required for studio‑grade vocal or instrument capture. That is by design – the SM31FH is built for the gym floor, not the control room. For users who teach multiple classes back‑to‑back, Shure's sweat‑rating advice recommends having more than one unit and alternating them to allow each to dry fully between sessions; the fact that the SM31FH comes with two interchangeable windscreens helps here too. The headset can be employed as a standalone replacement for existing Shure wireless systems or bought as part of a BLX or GLX‑D bundle.

About Shure

The American company Shure began developing microphones during the early 1930s and is one of the pioneers of the audio engineering sector. Models such as the 55 Unidyne – known to many as the "Elvis microphone" – and the SM57 and SM58 which appeared in the mid-1960s are still ubiquitous in live sound production today. They enjoy cult status among musicians and technicians alike. In the 1990s, Shure introduced the first wireless microphones and in-ear monitoring systems and became a market leader in this field. In addition to microphones, Shure offers a wide range of earphones and headphones for studio and live use, as well as various accessories.

For spin class, not a studio session

The SM31FH is designed to be worn on the left side, with the gooseneck adjusted so that the capsule sits at the corner of the mouth – close enough to benefit from the proximity effect's warmth, far enough to keep plosives manageable. The included windscreen tames breath and wind noise; a replacement screen is available separately. The headset is designed to be wiped down with an alcohol‑free antiseptic after each session, and the pair of windscreens included can simply be washed regularly – routine care that extends the product's working life in high‑moisture environments. The wireframe headband remains secure during high‑impact movement, and the low profile keeps the microphone unobtrusive on camera. For fitness instructors, the Shure SM31FH is a practical, durable solution that prioritises reliability and comfort over sonic refinement.

A
Good quality wireless headset for aerobics and dance instructors

I bought the Shure SM31FH headset wireless mic to replace another Shure mic headset that was not functioning properly. The informtion given about the product said it would fit any Shure wireless system - and I am delighted that it does indeed fit my existing Shure wireless system. I ordered it on Monday morning hoping it would arrive by Friday and it actually arrived a day earlier, so excellent service from Thomann. The mic has good sound but is picking up some breathing sounds at the moment. The advice is to put the mic at the corner of the mouth, but I am not very big and the headset cannot be adjusted to fit my small head. Thus the mic sticks out a bit. I do prefer to have an adjustable headset, but, having said all that, I am still very pleased with the microphone so far, after 1 week's use. The price was reasonable too and much cheaper than having to buy a complete new system.
