Three-output headphone amplifier

The Superlux HA3D is a compact headphone amplifier designed to distribute a single stereo mix to up to three listeners, each with an independent volume control and dedicated peak LED indicating when the signal approaches clipping. Balanced stereo signals connect via a pair of XLR inputs, while unbalanced sources can be connected through either a 6.35mm jack or 3.5mm mini-jack input. Only one input type should be used at any one time. A dedicated loop output allows additional HA3D units to be cascaded whenever more than three independent headphone feeds are required. Powered either by two AA batteries or an external 5–17V supply, the HA3D is equally suited to studio installations and mobile recording where mains power isn't always available. With a typical battery life of around 12 hours when driving a single pair of 75-ohm headphones, it comfortably covers extended rehearsals or recording sessions. A front-panel mono switch also allows a stereo mix to be checked in mono directly at the amplifier.

Clearly laid out connections

The Superlux HA3D's three headphone outputs are grouped on the right-hand side of the unit, keeping inputs and outputs physically separated for a clear signal flow. The first output also includes a 3.5mm mini-jack as an alternative headphone connection. Independent volume controls for all three outputs sit on the front panel alongside the mono/stereo switch, while individual peak LEDs illuminate approximately 3dB before clipping to provide a clear visual indication of available headroom. The power LED doubles as a battery-status indicator, changing from green to red when approximately four hours of battery life remain. The loop output in turn allows additional HA3D units to be connected whenever more headphone outputs are required.

Musicians, engineers, and mobile use

The Superlux HA3D is aimed at small recording sessions, rehearsal setups, and location work where up to three musicians need independent headphone feeds from a single mix source. Each headphone output uses its own amplifier circuit, allowing every listener to adjust their monitoring level independently without affecting the others. With a dynamic range of 120dB and THD+noise below 0.03%, the HA3D delivers measured performance that comfortably exceeds expectations at its price point. The aluminium alloy chassis keeps weight to 560g while providing adequate protection for regular transport. Battery operation with a colour-coded charge indicator makes the HA3D a practical standalone monitoring solution for outdoor recording, rehearsal rooms without convenient power points, and compact live rigs.

About Superlux

Anyone looking for microphones and headphones with an excellent price-performance ratio will certainly find what they are looking for from Superlux. The company employs experienced specialists and produces its articles at various locations in its own factories in China and Taiwan, where the products are developed, tested, and manufactured under one roof. Everything can therefore be manufactured on site, from the raw material to the finished device, which has a positive effect on the selling price. The products are often praised in test reports for their sound and manufacturing quality. With Superlux products, private users can achieve solid recording and mixing results even without a large budget.

Flexible source connections

Whether connected to a mixing console, audio interface, smartphone, or portable music player, the Superlux HA3D adapts easily to a wide range of monitoring tasks. In the studio, it distributes a bus mix to up to three musicians, each with independent volume control, while rehearsals and practice sessions benefit from the ability to play along with backing tracks directly from a mobile device. Additional HA3D units can be cascaded whenever more headphone feeds are required, providing an inexpensive way to expand a monitoring system as ensembles grow. Combined with its battery operation, compact dimensions, and lightweight aluminium construction, the HA3D is equally at home in permanent studio installations, rehearsal rooms, location recording, and mobile live rigs.

NP
Flexible useful and compact

This is a great item to carry around with you and it can solve a lot of headaches. I use it sometimes for headphones and sometimes to increase the amount of outputs from a mixer for instance. It has a lot of level available so serves as a sort of DI box when there is a mismatch being pro and consumer gear. Lasts a long time on batteries and can work on a wide range of current from an adapter so it's really flexible in the field. I did have to send it back though as the locking XLR would not let the cable go! It's only the second faulty product that I have had from Thomann (in fact I had two Behringer items go faulty too when I think about it but that was a few years ago now). It was sent back for repair and of course Thomann were quick and efficient. Not only is Thomann cheaper most of the time but the service is on average so much better than we get here in Britain. This HA3D does cost more than similar items but it is built like a brick. The only real issue I have is that the paint flakes off really easily. Then again yes we need our gear to look good when performing but reliability is the thing that we MUST have . This does seem to fit the bill. Worth the money.

A
Excellent box of tricks
Anonymous 28.04.2014
I bought this thing in order to allow an assistant to hear what I was doing while mixing. It was a bit expensive, but the size, build and features seemed to be just right, so I went with it. I wasn't disappointed - it's heavy, but that's because it's made out of some sort of bulletproof unobtainium plating. It's battery powered, and the battery housing is easily accessible (no screws). It has XLR line inputs, which is perfect, as well as TRS ins, if that works for you. The three headphone outputs have independent level control, which is perfect for when everyone is wearing different models of headphone. Most of the headphone outputs are quarter-inch TRS, but there's a parallel minijack output so that you can plug some earphones in directly without needing any adapters.

All in all, it's a solid unit, and does the job perfectly. Just don't drop it on your foot!

S
Incredible value, Superb sound
StuartS 25.04.2016
Possibly the best value headphone amp on the market, the HA3D isn't feature packed and offers limited connectivity, but for the right user it may be all you need.

I bought this to sit in my hi-fi rig alongside a couple of other headamps, the excellent ART Pro Audio Heampamp6 and the new Behringer Monitor2USB which has a crossfeed function. The Superlux trounces both in terms of sound, even right out of the box. Used on battery power it is absolutely silent to my ears, through a pair of Sennheiser HD800S's. It's compact and very solidly built, although it does look a bit industrial.

PRO's
Brilliant value
Battery powered (can be used with a mains adapter - not inlcuded)
3 TRS headphone outputs with individual volume controls
Solid build
Excellent sound quality with wide freq. response
Balanced (XLR) and unbalanced 1/4" and 1/8" stereo inputs
Loop out to connect additional units

CON's
Nothing at this price!

Just be aware there are no balance, bass & treble adjustment or mono function for critical studio listening. If that suits then I thoroughly recommend this unit and for the other functions there are plenty of rack size units which would happily complement the HA3D

P
More uses than you would expect
Paul1638 20.01.2015
This works great as a headphone amp. Balanced and unbalanced inputs, will drive most headphones to very loud level before distortion, good sound, dual power sources, and runs a long time on a couple of AA batteries.

In addition, I have found this useful for other purposes. Often I need to have a line level volume control, and this works great because of its multiple input and output connectors and battery power. It is also helpful when I need few dB of clean gain, or a way to go from a balanced to an unbalanced line. It adds no hum because it is battery powered.

One nit to pick: I wish the battery cover had a retainer so it's not so easily dropped or lost.

It's a well built and useful box that I would buy again.
