Teenage Engineering EP-40 Launch Bundle

I will leave the TE fan/hate wars to the internet since I frankly don't care. The only thing that matters is if this gear works for me.

So first the elephant in the room. Looks are subjective, but I find it very cool looking except for that greenscreen (not because it's green but because it makes things harder to read for no reason). Other than that, I dig the design, not everything has to be in serious black with Ariel fonts.

The main reason I bought it was because I simply wanted a device that can record high resolution (as in "steps") MIDI for external harware synths, just the way I played it including pitch bend, mod wheel and CC controls and without unnecessary restrictions in number of tracks, length of steps and bars like most sequencers do, and then arrange the song with the recorded patterns and such. I am glad that EP-40 delivers in that regard, and frankly there aren't many options in the market that I know of that can do this (at least not even remotely close at this price range). This works great.

For me the sampling features were secondary since I don't really use samples in my productions, but now with this device, maybe I also throw a sample or two in my songs for some extra atmosphere (rain, wind etc) all while also sequencing my hardware synths as well from the same device. As far as I dug, sampling on the EP-40 works fine (hey it's foremost a sampler).

The sound coming out and the effects, are also prety good overall.

The Supertone synth engine is very limited though with basically 9 presets. Unless we are able to create custom presets for it, I can't see any use out of it unfortunately.

The overal workflow definetely needs getting used to. I sat down reading the manual top to bottom and this thing has more shortcuts than Photoshop. However there are also a lot of features packed in so I get it. The wacky icons also don't help in that, at least not initially. The features that I am interested in though (see above) are thankfully more straightforward.

The microphone that it comes with is free, so I won't even go on about it.

// Wishlist:

- Wish it was possible to enable Record while playing. Right now if you disable Record it is impossible to re-enable it. Makes no sense. We can only temporarily hold Rec down to overdub while holding...c'mon, why?

- Wish there was a system setting to always start from the first bar when hitting Play. Right now we need to Shift + Play to start from the beginning, but I would much rather preferred to always start from the beginning instead (and maybe Shift + Play to "continue")

- Wish it was possible to quanitize a single pattern all at once. Right now to quantize a single pattern (if it was recorded in freestyle mode), we need to hold down the correction thing while the pattern is playing (and notes are quantized while they are playing).

Es ist ein Spielzeug - nicht mehr und nicht weniger.
Ich wollte mir damals schon den ersten EP bestellen, habe es aber dann Dank 'fadergate' doch gelassen. Da ich ein grosser Dub-Fan bin, dachte ich ich probiere den Riddim einmal aus. Nach 2 Stunden war klar: das geht direkt zurück.

Das einzige, was dem Gerät das Prädikat 'Dub' verleiht sind die Samples. Alles andere hat mit Dub nichts zu tun. Ich meine hier insbesondere die Effektsektion. Leute, was habr Ihr euch dabei gedacht?! Statt eines standesgemässen Spring-Reverbs (als Simulation, klar) gibt es so ein verwaschenes TE-Reverb, welches sie wahrscheinlich in jede Kiste bauen. Das Delay hat auch nichts dubbiges. Wo also sind die Spring Reverbs her, die man in den Demos hört? Direkt mitgesampled wahrscheinlich...
Das Delay ist auch 08/15 und lässt kein Dub-Feeling bei mir aufkommen.
Und das sind die zwei Effekte (plus einem Phaser vielleicht) auf die es nun mal ankommt. Enttäuschend und darum harte Abstriche beim Sound,
Dub-Samples zusammensuchen kann ich selber, dafür brauche ich mir kein Plastikspielzeug zu kaufen.

Achja, und wenn ich nichts übersehen habe gibt es nur einen verfügbaren Effekt für alle vier Spuren. Da könnte ich mich irren, aber die grottige Bedienungsanleitung (nur als website, nicht mal als PDF!) hat mir auch nicht weitergeholfen.

Das Ting habe ich nicht mal mehr ausgepackt, weil es schon klar war, dass das Gerät hier nicht alt wird. Das Mikro aus Plast mit Hupe hätte es auch nicht mehr rausgerissen.

Die Bedienung ist auch erwartbar grausig, aber daran könnte man sich gewöhnen, wenn der Sound stimmen würde. Ich hab mich vom 'namedropping' einiger Dub-Grössen täuschen lassen. Clever gemachtes Marketing, das muss ich TE lassen.

Das was dann dem Fass den Boden ausgeschlagen hat, war die Tatsache, dass das Ding innerhalb der zwei Stunden dreimal abgestürzt ist. Aus unerfindlichen Gründen (nach firmware-update wohlgemerkt - das einzige was Dank webmidi über Firefox gut funktioniert hat).

Je met toutes les notes à fond pour faire remonter la côte. ça fait 20 ans que j'utilise et connais les sampleurs. Mon dernier en date c'était le sp404 mk2. Ce ep40, je l'ai offert à un proche, j'ai eu le temps de l'apprendre et de l'utiliser. Niveau qualité sonore, c'est parfait, comme tout à notre époque, le numérique permet des reproductions parfaites. Les effets sont parfaitement normaux et utilisables !Le micro fourni avec est pas le plus merveilleux, mais justement, j'adore son côté cheap façon débuts du blues, il a un grain. Les gens deviennent beaucoup trop raleurs et exigeants. Quand on pense aux machines du passé, et que l'on voit toutes les possibilités de machines comme celle-ci, pourquoi se plaindre... La mémoire est pas dingue, mais il y a largement de quoi s'amuser. La machine arrive avec 50% de mémoire remplie de samples. c'est simple d'utilisation, et pour le rapport qualité prix, je dirais que c'est le meilleur sampleur "débutant". Si vous voulez un sampleur à sound design, c'est le sp404 mk2, si vous voulez une des meilleures groovebox à tout faire, du marché, c'est le digitakt 1 ou 2. Et si vous voulez un petit sampleur pour jouer avec vos sons, ce ep40 sera déjà parfait, et il pourra même vous accompagner sur scène. Par contre, teenage engineering, je les déteste ! tout est en ligne (update et manuel), pas de manuel téléchargeable, et il est très mal conçu. En dehors de cette "modernité" déplorable, tout est parfait.

Wie die anderen EP-Modelle ist auch der RIDDIM vor allem eins: ein shübsches Spielzeug. Die Samples klingen wirklich toll und sind sicher sehr genretypisch. Als einzelnes Samplepack würde ich mir das sicher gerne kaufen. Aber was soll ich mit der Hardware anfangen, die auf Grund des - heutzutage wirklich nicht anders als lächerlich zu bezeichnenden - kleinen Speicherplatzes für eigenes Sampling nahezu unbrauchbar ist (da hatte der alte Digitakt mit seinen 2GB ja noch mehr). Also bezahlt und bekommt man ein herrvorragend klingendes Samplepack mit einer Hardware, die man für sonst nichts einsetzen wird. Da Platz auch bei mir ein rares Gut ist, habe ich keine Verwendung für eine weitere Hardware. Nicht zuletzt habe ich immer noch Bedenken bezüglich der Lizenzregelungen von Teenage Engineering...
