Solid wood, solid craftsmanship
In the mid-price range, the Thomann 33 1/4 Europe Double Bass immediately stands out thanks to its solid wood construction - an uncommon feature in a bracket where laminated models typically dominate. For bowed instruments, solid wood is renowned for delivering superior resonance, enhanced dynamics, and a tone that evolves and matures over time. Handcrafted in Europe by luthiers steeped in traditional expertise, this instrument is designed with attention to every detail. In keeping with classic tonewood combinations, this double bass features a solid spruce top, solid maple back and sides, and a durable ebony fingerboard.
Crafted in the European tradition
The Thomann 33 1/4 Europe is inspired by double basses made in Saxony and Bohemia during the early 20th century. Its outline follows the viola da gamba shape typical of the region, with a flat back and purfling at the upper heel. The instrument is built entirely from solid tonewoods: Spruce for the soundboard, and maple for the back and ribs. It features a 90.5cm scale length, corresponding to the widely used 1/4 size. An ebony fingerboard offers a smooth and robust playing surface. Each instrument is set up in the Thomann workshop, and string height adjustments can be requested. A set of versatile and durable strings is fitted as standard, making the instrument ready to play "out of the box".
A reliable choice for beginners
The Thomann 33 1/4 Europe is an excellent option for demanding students looking for a quality first double bass. Whether for Jazz pizzicato, Bluegrass, or Classical string ensemble work, the instrument's tonal character can be carefully influenced via string choice and playing style. Even more experienced players may find it a dependable second instrument, especially for rehearsals, lessons, or situations where a more rugged build is required.
About Thomann string instruments
Thomann-brand instruments, which are exclusively built by renowned manufacturers, now constitute a large part of Thomann’s product range alongside numerous big-name brands. With unbeatable price-performance ratios, Thomann string instruments are the obvious first choice for students and beginners – and others too. The technical features and uncompromising sound quality they offer are usually reserved for much more expensive instruments found in the professional market segment.
Choosing the right size
The 1/4-size Thomann 33 Europe Double Bass primarily caters to young and even very young beginners, including children. Its compact body and shorter scale make it particularly manageable, especially with the endpin fully retracted. However, hand size must also be taken into consideration when playing the double bass, and for children this is often a limitation. It is important therefore to ensure that the instrument is genuinely suited to the player and, when in doubt, opting for a smaller model generally ensures greater comfort and better playability. And size notwhistanding, the solid wood body delivers a surprisingly rich tone.
