Sculpting sounds

Calling it a "Sculpting Sampler" may make it sound rather mysterious, but the Torso Electronics S4 truly is a tool capable of genuine musical artistry. This desktop device combines the workflow of an analogue multitrack tape machine with the capabilities of a granular sampler and a modern effects processor, enabling unusual sound experiments and the creation of complex soundscapes. As with a conventional multitrack recorder, the S4 can record multiple audio tracks – the "sculpting" comes into play in the incredible levels of manipulation of which it is capable; samples can even be played like an instrument via MIDI. However, thanks to the clear, well-designed interface and the large, high-resolution display, the S4 can be operated intuitively and precisely, be it for recording a spontaneous burst of creativity or while performing live on stage.

Tape machine and sampler in one

The Torso Electronics S4 can record audio in 24-bit/48kHz quality across four stereo tracks. Overdub recordings are also an option, meaning it can be used as a loop station as well. Each track consists of a signal chain with five elements: Depending on their requirements, or as inspiration strikes, users can choose whether the track plays back stored audio, records live input, or functions as an eight-voice sampler. Next in line are a granular engine, a 48-band resonant filter with morphing capabilities, a colour section (featuring dual distortion, a compressor, bit reduction, and noise), and finally an effects section with reverb, freeze, and multiple delay types. Additionally, each track can be modulated using LFO, envelope, envelope follower, and random settings. For performing live, all these parameters can be freely mapped to eight dials and four buttons for punch-in effects. With the update to Torso's OS 2.0, the "Scene" and "Perform" features were also added, as well as numerous other functions.

Perfect for solo sculptors

The Torso Electronics S4 is has been designed from the ground up for experimental solo artists and ambitious sonic creators. Musicians can record any instrument or voice track by track, and manipulate the recordings either during or after the process. This allows unique, and uniquely atmospheric, soundscapes to be created from even simple sounds recorded via the line inputs or the built-in microphone – and all in a seamless workflow. The device itself is, on the face of it, actually quite straightforward and intuitive in its operation, but dedicated musicians who require even more options for real-time control can also connect the S4 to a MIDI controller.

About Torso Electronics

In 2018, Torso Electronics was founded in Copenhagen by a group of friends who had a clear mission: To develop groundbreaking electronic musical instruments. Their goal is still to make even the most complex, layered processes accessible through intuitive interfaces – while always keeping the music front and centre. Their first product, the T-1 algorithmic sequencer, is unusual both for its generative capabilities and its comprehensive connectivity. The S4 sculpting sampler is the company's second release; with its creative concept and intuitive workflow, it is especially well-suited to live performers and musicians who like to work instinctively.

One note is all it takes...

The strength of the Torso Electronics S4 lies in the way its four tracks can combine different types of "material", as sound generation is referred to here. To get the creative process started, producers can make use of pre-existing audio data, use a track as a small, playable sample player via a MIDI keyboard, run a synthesizer through the audio inputs, or record acoustic instruments and voices via the built-in microphone. Through further processing with the granular engine, the filter, and the effects, these audio tracks can then be freely worked into dense atmospheres, smooth chords, chopped sound fragments, and distorted artifacts, allowing for the creation of complex, distinctive soundscapes. Up to 128 of these "scenes" can be saved within a project, and musicians can switch between their projects for each new song during a performance.

Not finished yet...

A powerful sampler with huge potential—still a work in progress

The S-4 is a great instrument with a lot of potential, but it’s clear that it’s not quite finished yet. Three of the buttons are still labeled “Coming Soon,” likely to be activated with the next firmware update (v2). However, there’s little transparency about when that will actually happen. Communication is mostly limited to their Discord channel, which might not be ideal for everyone.

That said, the interface is very intuitive, and the granular engine, ring modulation, and sound shaping options are impressive. However, there’s still no way to save your settings as a reusable template—only as a project—so it’s not as flexible for performance or iterative work as it could be.

Another downside is the relatively high noise floor on the analog outputs. On the bright side, the 10 inputs and 10 outputs over USB-C are fantastic for routing, even if the mapping options could use more flexibility.

Overall, the S-4 could become one of the best hardware tools for working with field recordings and samples, but in its current state, it feels incomplete—which makes its price tag feel a bit high.

I’m honestly still debating whether to keep it or not. Some days I love it; other days, I really don’t.

Overpriced broken toy

Interesting device, but does not worth it's price at all...
Getting so many software issues for this amount of money is unfair. Even after a year of release and introducing firmware 2.0, s4 functions like a broke toy...very expansive toy.

Feature wise it's a matter of taste, but also not enough to justify it's crazy price.
