Vactrol lowpass gate

  • Combination of low-pass filter (LP) and VCA
  • Based on the idea of the Buchla module 292
  • The frequency (in LP mode) or the amplitude (in VCA mode) can be controlled manually (F / A) and via 2 external control voltage inputs: CV1 (without an attenuator) and CV2 (with attenuator)
  • Function of the module can be set via toggle switch (LP / VCA )
  • Width: 8TE / 8HP / 40.3 mm
  • Depth: 50 mm (measured from the rear of the front panel)
  • Power requirements: +20 mA (+12 V) / 20 mA (-12 V)
Available since December 2007

Doepfer A-101-2 LPG
Blair 02.06.2014
The Doepfer A-101-2 is a classic Low Pass gate design - a combination of Low Pass Filter and VCA. It is built around a Vactrol - a combination of light source and photo sensitive receptor, which acts like a VCA with a slow decay or 'ring' to it.

It can function as either or both effects. It also has an additional trick up its sleeve in that you can select LPF, VCA or the combined effect (known as Low Pass Gate or LPG) by feeding a combination of 2 gate signals into the unit. This can lead to rhythmic, pulsating sounds from the unit.

The A-101-2 is easy to use, and can function as a straight forward filter module, or (by setting the resonance to minimum) can deliver the classic Buchla LPG patch. It is a very cost-effective unit, in that it can respond just to a clock pulse or gate, and does not require an envelope generator for the VCA to cut the output to zero.

The only reservation I have with this unit is that the Vactrols employed tend to deliver a faster decay than LPG's from other makers I have tried. On the other hand, I have read that there can be individual differences between 2 Vactrols, so that another A-101-2 may sound quite different.

This is possibly one of my most used Doepfer modules (bar my VCO's) and gets used on pretty much every patch I make.

It works brilliantly as a VCA, but it really shines when you switch modes and the vactoral kicks in on the Low Pass Filter. It just sounds so good and is great for percussive sounds of all types.

Another great point about it is that it also works very very well as a sinewave oscillator as it's got one of the sweetest sines in modularland when self oscillating. And it tracks very well.

So if you're in the market for a VCA, get this module.
If you're in the market for a filter, get this module.

Just get this module. It's a cracker.

Solid Filter Module with Bite

The A-101-2 is a really versatile module. Really easy to dial in whatever sound you are going for. The two inputs for CV can be really useful as well, as CV2 can free up a precious VCA in your system.

Mon LPG préféré!
pmanu 22.06.2021
J'ai testé quelques modèles de LPG, et celui-ci est de loin mon préféré! J'aime particulièrement bien le réglage de résonance, qui donne un côté très claquant au son!
