The search for the right strings

A musician can spend their entire life searching for the right instrument – so finding the right strings should be made as easy as possible. After all, there's a genuine physical connection between players and their strings, which play a huge role in how an instrument feels. The DR Strings Dragon Skin+ DBSM5-45 Coated strings are a medium-gauge stainless steel string set for five-string multiscale basses, made using high-quality materials and an ultra-thin coating. Thanks to DR's patented manufacturing process, they offer exceptional longevity, yet without introducing any unfamiliar feel – the strings are barely distinguishable from uncoated ones. For anyone looking to give their instrument a real boost in dynamics and volume, DR Strings is a strong choice.

DR Strings Dragon Skin+ DBSM5-45 Coated

A patented coating

The technical design of the Dragon Skin+ DBSM5-45 Coated strings is no simple matter; it reflects a very high level of engineering expertise. Once the strings reach a certain thickness, they're wound to ensure both a powerful tone and a comfortable playing feel. The way DR Strings puts this into practice is particularly well executed: The strings are built around a specially adapted steel core, which is wrapped with coated stainless steel. This process brings out the best qualities of the string. This version of the Dragon Skin+ offers a premium playing feel, along with a full, rich tone characterised by an open high and low end, and a noticeable increase in output compared to uncoated strings. Taken together, this combination can lift a bass to the next level.

An accurate core

Where conditions on stage might once have meant changing strings after each gig, the Dragon Skin+ DBSM5-45 Coated strings keep going show after show. This is thanks primarily to their outer wrap; it's almost impervious to corrosion and moisture, while simultaneously contributing to the strings' strong, clear resonance. The patented Coated Wrap Wire also ensures that the strings feel great, giving purists exactly the playing sensation they'd expect. But the Dragon Skins aren't just cutting-edge on the outside: With DR's unique Accurate Core Technology, which applies almost microscopic locking grooves to the precisely milled steel core, the wrap sits perfectly within the string's architecture, resulting in a fuller tone and enhanced sustain. These are some high-tech bass strings, setting new standards in terms of sound and play feel – all without compromising their flexibility or tensile strength.

About DR Strings

Founded in 1989 by Mark Dronge – son of Guild Guitars founder Alfred Dronge – DR Strings is a US-based string manufacturer deeply rooted in a lifelong passion for music and craftsmanship. Drawing on decades of expertise, the family-run company combines premium materials, time-tested production techniques, and skilled artisanship to create diverse string sets designed to unlock the full potential of every instrument. This relentless pursuit of innovation and quality has earned DR Strings the trust of global artists, from Sting and Derek Trucks to Jared James Nichols and Bootsy Collins, making it a go-to choice for discerning musicians worldwide.

An improved experience

Alongside feel and tone, tuning stability is absolutely essential when it comes to strings. Here too, the American manufacturer DR Strings has come up with a smart solution. Accurate Core Technology strengthens the core and evens out natural irregularities, allowing it to form a more consistent bond with the stainless steel winding, which helps the strings stay in tune even when they're played hard. The Dragon Skin+ DBSM5-45 Coated set is gauged .045, .065, .085t, .105t, .120t, making it comfortable to play and specifically designed for the variable scale lengths of multiscale basses. Tunings down to Drop A can be handled with ease while maintaining a clear and defined tone. In the end, this string set is the result of careful research and painstaking production, with the clear aim of improving a musician's experience in every way a bass string can.

Well, it's a multi-scale set

I've been using Elixir strings consistently for over 10 years, but I recently switched to a Dingwall multi-scale bass, and since Elixir doesn't make suitable sets, I had to find an alternative. Since I play frequently, I wanted strings that wouldn’t require weekly changes due to a loss of tone, so I opted for "DR Strings Dragon Skin”, which DR claims offer "extra long life." I installed them, carefully following the manufacturer's instructions. The strings seemed dark gray to me, unlike any other strings I've used before. Plus, they felt different too — my fingers seemed to stick to them, and I had to adjust my playing technique.

Now, to the crucial part: the sound. Right out of the box, they were as dull as uncoated strings that have already seen multiple gigs. Despite this, I decided to give them a chance by taking the bass to rehearsal and then to a gig. Strangely for coated strings, they sounded even worse after these sessions. So I can’t say they died after one gig—they were dead from the very first note.

In summary, I’m giving them one star because they are, after all, strings and can be installed on a guitar, and a second star for the multi-scale tapered wound set, which is hard to find.

h
worst string in term of feels so far
hr.o 03.10.2025
I bought Rigeneral strings as an alternative to Elixir, since they don’t make a multiscale set. Honestly, I didn’t notice any improvement in clarity compared to my 6-month-old factory strings.

On top of that, the surface feels very rough—almost like playing on rusted strings sprayed with WD-40.

Definitely not something I’ll try again.
