4. Remote Control

Most digital mixers can be controlled not only directly on the device but also remotely using a computer or tablet. Some mixers might even be challenging or impossible to operate without remote control.

Many digital rack mixers come with a built-in Wi-Fi router and access point. This means they can be directly connected to an iPad or similar devices without additional equipment for control. If the wireless connection's range or stability isn't sufficient, there's usually an option to connect an external router. The major advantages of such mixers lie in their affordable price and compact size. These variations are highly appealing for small stages, rehearsal spaces, or as mixers in in-ear monitor racks.

There are also intermediate solutions that focus on tablet or computer control but with basic operation capabilities on the device itself. Most of these mixers feature a network interface for router connection to enable remote control. Should the network connection ever drop, there's also the option to make essential settings directly on the device. Unlike "full-fledged" mixers, these setups save space and money by not having faders built into the device.

Even for mixers designed to be operated directly on the device, having remote control at your fingertips comes in handy. Imagine those hectic soundchecks or gigs; stepping away from the not-so-perfect FOH spot to gain a clearer perspective could be your secret weapon.

Many mixers, aside from full tablet remote control, offer a "stripped-down" monitor app. This allows musicians to independently adjust their own monitor mix using their smartphones, regardless of the technician. This way, both technicians and musicians can focus on their tasks without hassle.
