Fully customisable DAW controller

The Elgato Stream Deck XL is a universal DAW controller that can be adapted to any user's personal needs with a remarkable degree of freedom and flexibility. The hardware was originally developed for live streaming video content via YouTube, Twitch and the like, but it's also extremely well suited to controlling DAW software. Thanks to its simple folder structure, the device's 32 buttons – each one a tiny, customisable LCD screen! – can be freely assigned up to 210 keyboard shortcuts (or other actions). The ability to freely assign thumbnails to each of these keys ensures users also have a clear overview of their options, making it easy and intuitive to work just the way they want.

Organised keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are essential for a good workflow when using a DAW. With the software included with the Elgato Stream Deck XL, users can assign any imaginable key combination, no matter how complex, to a single LCD key on the controller. Apart from this, other actions such as starting programmes or opening websites can also be triggered. To create the personalised thumbnails that are displayed on the LCD keys, simply use screenshots or any other suitable images – another avenue for every musician's creativity!

Elgato Stream Deck XL

Interesting for anyone and everyone

Thanks to its universal concept, the Elgato Stream Deck XL is suitable for use with any conceivable software that can be controlled via keyboard shortcuts – this of course applies to every DAW on the market. Whether it's Apple Logic, Ableton Live, Steinberg Cubase, Avid Pro Tools, Presonus Studio One or any other more or less established application – any software suite with lots of hotkeys can be made immensely more intuitive and accessible with the Elgato Stream Deck XL. Equally, the complex software used in other creative fields besides music, such as image editing or video production, also lends itself well to the Stream Deck.

About Elgato

The Elgato brand was launched in 2002 as an in-house brand of the German company Elgato Systems, which was itself founded by Markus Fest in 1992. Elgato, with its headquarters in Munich, manufactures consumer electronics with a focus on video streaming. The company's portfolio includes several capture cards which allow audio and video output signals to be recorded and transmitted to computer screens, as well as numerous compatible accessories and software products. Elgato's entire lineup is designed in Germany and in California and sold in over 80 countries. In July 2018, Elgato was purchased by Corsair Components, where it continues to operate as an independent brand.

From simple transport functions to complex macros

The Elgato Stream Deck XL can trigger any action in a DAW software, however complex, that can also be activated via a keyboard shortcut. The most common tasks of a DAW controller include transport functions such as play, stop, and record, and also opening windows such as the mixer or the plug-in browser. Producers who like to assign complex chains of commands (macros) to a hotkey in their DAW can also control them via the Elgato Stream Deck XL – and since the 32 LCD buttons are, of course, backlit, the device can even be used in the dim lighting conditions of a stage or studio.

Remarkably easy to configure and use
chalker_and_talker 21.12.2020
This is proving far more useful than I had initially conceived (even after all the research I did on it before purchase). Other review here and elsewhere will talk about its functionality, so let me address some points you may not get elsewhere.

I'm using it on my Mac Mini (running Big Sur) and haven't encountered any incompatiblities or problems. It's been absolutely fantastic for my teaching online as it effortlessly allows me to control not only OBS and my Atem Mini but also PowerPoint (for slides) and VLC (for various media clips) *in the background* while Zoom takes centre-stage - which is absolutely fantastic.

Using Bitfocus Companion, my Elgato can do quite complex things with OBS, Atem Mini (via Software Control) and Reaper.

Finally: yes, a lot of its functionality (if not all of it) can be replaced with software (e.g. AutoHotKeys and macro keyboards) but this is easy to setup, simple to use, and wonderfully tactile.

Could this be cheaper? Well, I certainly balked at the price, and cannot say it warrants *all* its high price. But if the price doesn't bother you too much, what I can say is that it does all that it promised (me!) and more.

I'm happy!
No_Mad_Man 12.12.2024
I ordered it as a gift for my friend (she is a streamer). Unfortunately, she lives very far away, and I have not yet reached her to give this streamdeck in person, but I tried to connect it to my laptop - everything works perfectly! I never doubted the quality of Elgato products, as they are leaders in the production of such equipment. Special thanks to the Thomann store for the fast delivery, as well as for offering the lowest price I could find! Greetings from sunny Bulgaria!

UD
Incredibly useful device for Mac or PC
Unison Detune 04.11.2025
I only heard about these when Whytse did a studio workflow video. I was a bit taken aback that such a thing even existed and that I hadn't heard about them. I should say if you have a spare phone then you can use the software to achieve the same with a touchscreen but I love this thing! It comes with a very stable stand that it clings to magnetically. This also doubles up as a cable tidy. Each button is a mini LCD screen and displays an icon to remind you what it does. The XL is the perfect size for me with 32 buttons but you must remember that you are not limited to 32 functions because you can flip between different pages which allows for the grouping of commands by software task. A download of the free app Companion allows you to create your own commands, such as adding specific plugins, so it is very useful for music production. I have used Editors Keys keyboards in the past but this is updateable and very flexible. I can see me wanting a second soon!
